COMMERCIAL NEWS.

THÈ CHINA TEA TRADE.

The year has been a disastrons DAD far the tea trade. The. Russian ärma having no orders, the bulk of the crop was sent · ES Shanghai, and only about 1,000 ha fchesis were disposed of in Hankow. Even in Shanghai only a amall proportion of the 'crop found buyers, only about 65,000 balf-chests of Keemuns arrived, of which about 9,000 half-cheits have been sold. The quality was better than in the previous year aad fine tens realised the same. taal prices, but medium and com- Tuon teas were a drug in the market. Hankow teas were bad- ls made and nor wanted. 4,000 half-chests were sent to Shang- bal, but had not been sold up to the end of the year. The military disturbances in Hunan prevented the sending down of any more tes, and it is estimated that about 40,000 half-chests still remain in the tea districts in that province. The quality and leaf of lebang teas were very much inferior to the previous year's, and the price was about 20 per cent. lower than in 1913. The outlook for the China tea trade is deplorable. Larga stocks have accumulated in Eng- land, and prices are so law that China tea cannot compete with Indiad, Cegion, or Java teas un- der present conditions..The Raksian market is still closed; an attempt was made to open busi- ness relations with the Soviets, but though the tea was taken, no payment for it was forthcoming... The tea firms which still survive have enormous stocks of unsale- abis 1918 and 1919 teas remaining on hand, and the godowns are choked with huge steeks of brick tea, the manufacture of which has now ceased. The teamen bave such large stocks of 1920-as on hand that it is doubtfat if any new tea will be prepared for 1921. which will militate against the keeping alive of the trade till better times. While there is no sale for the old deteriorated China stocks, some business could still be done in the finer qualities of fresh teas if they came into the market: but, failing that no revival of the tea, trade with foreign countries seems to be possible.
