heatre sunk in the greensward, acd so, by banks where at the nd of January violeta abound, to those tangled rains usually known as Cicero's villa.

Professor Lancani, the most brilliant and most imaginstiva of archaeologists has long declared that the ruins 80 described were never. thosa of Cia. ro's Tusculan Villa Now an accident has proved that he was right. Near Grotta Fer- rata a gentleman has been clear- ing the ground for a modern villa. In the course of excavations the workmen found some mosaics whose delicacy of workmanship put them in the froot rack of all bitherto found and possibly make them unique. Further, there is well decoration of the best period with admirable stucco ornamentation and delightful frescos showing the brilisat Spanish red and deep Egyptian blue. Broken columas amply show the buge dimensions of the vills and there are other indications of ita importance. The orientation ·f the vills and its general relationship to the position of the famous villa of Lucullus are additional evidences of the correctness of Lanciani's brilliant guess. Now the ques *ion arises whether the people of Rome who have recently saved ibe Colosseum from "deseeration" will be able to prevent the ruins of one of the most famous land- marks in ancient literature from). be ng covered up to construct a modern and doubtless gracelses- country boose.

They wil be provided with wrestling helles, skating rinks and chepp dining houses and shops. Paflfégare dens are also being pisimed in the outskirts of the Capital to attract the citizens for qñcreation.
