NOVEL, RAILWAY BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION,

“A railway over-brioge recently constructed to carry an extension of the Boulevard Belgion over the Ceinture railway in Brussels ex-". hibits a type of design which la somewhat unusual if not altogeth- er novel. The problem for solu- tion was to span the railway in such a manner as to provide the requisite head-room for milway Traffic without involving an in- convenient gradient on the road- way above. The conditions made it necessary to provide a contra span of not less than 80-ft, with two outer spans, making up a total length of about 169-ft over all, and to limit the centre apan to 5ft in depth. The design accepted by the engineers of the Belgian State Railways provided in for a cantilever girder 147-ft. T-im long, composed of a central'span of 82 supported by plers on ** each side of the railway lines,

A survey issued by the Mineral Resources Committee of the -British - Imperial --Institute-esti- mates that the British Empire possesses about 23 per cent. of the total coal resources of the world. These tot-l resourCRM LIS placed at 7,397,553 million tons {{metric), of which 1,729,105 million tons are credited to the British Empire. The detailed figures in- dicate that the greater part of the Empire's mineral fust reserves consist of sub-bituminous and brown coal, and lignite. Bitumi- nous coal resources amount tu about 40 per cent of the total and anthracite constitutes 7 per cent.
