ENGINEERS FOR MOTOR SHIPS.
Unless the present proposals are somewhat modified, it is not unlikely that a shortage of en- gineers for motor-ships may arise in the course of the next year or two. The Board of Trade has prepared a new set of regulations for engineers desiring to obtain Second and Chief Engineer's Icertificates for motor-ships. These come into force on January 1, 1922, according to the present proposals, and any man who has not ¬btained his certificate before thai date will have to serve several years in workshops where oil engines are built, before he will be considered, to have the necessary qualifications, and in addition must pass 18 months at sea in a motor-ship as engineer on regular watch. As most of the Chief Engineers for new motor-ships are ordinarily re- cruited from steamers and are. usually men with Chief Engineera. BO.T. certificates, strict enforce- meut of the regulations would probably mean that many Chief -- Engineers would have to go Ashore for some years, and tho to spend a period in a junior capacity at sea in a motor-ship before they could become chief. engineers of internal-combustion engined vessels.
