M. BRIAND'S SPIRITED DEFENCE-OF-BRITAIN.

.

Pariz, May 27.

Prior to the Chamber passing its vots of confidence in the Government, M. Briand reinterposed and resumed the foreign policy debate. In the course of the debate, replying to ex-Mimster Klotz, who asked if he ld not think France had already made too many concessions to Britain; he said, “Our Allies have made as many, perhaps more, to us The Fremier boldly urged the members not to abstain from rating, but they must support the Government if a more audacious policy was required.

The Chamber passed a vota of confidence after overwhelmingly defeating the motion of ex-War Minister Lefevre in favour of referring

the London Agreement to a committee of the Chamber, to which 1. Briand objected as it would mean giving Parliament the right to modify the Reparations Commission's deciziona.

DJAMBI OIL FIELDS.

Bondon, May 27.

The Morning Post's Amsterdam correspondent'states that there “is a growing belief in Hague political circles that the First Chamber will reject the Djambi Bill and thus enable the Government to introduce a paw bill whereby part of the Djambi oil fields will be granted to the Standard Oil Company. The Second Chamber intends to criticise the Government's failure to reveal the notes between Holland and the United States when the Bill was debated.

THE EGYPTIAN OUTBREAK.

London, May 27.

The Nationalist leader Zaghlal, who is held indirectly respon- sible for the recent outbreaks in Egypt, in a belsted appeal has called on the people to restrain their righteous anger against the Ministry and to cease their demonstrations. He endeavours to saddle the authorities with the responsibility for the disorders. Meantime the threatened railway strike at Cairo has not materialised. Twenty-five hundred striking railway-shop workers' have been dis- missed and even if reinstated will forfeit certain rights.

THE NAVAL HOLIDAY.

Washington, May 21.

The passage of Senator Borah's resolution was purely a formal victory for the pressure of outside opinion. It may have a certain moral effect, but meanwhile the House has voted £74,500,000 for the Navy, to which the Senate Naval Committee recommends the addition of £25,000,000. The latter sum has been reduced to £22,500,000 and it seems certain it will not be further reduced.

HEAVYWEIGHT WRESTLERS.

Kansas City, May 27. Zbysko retained the title of World's Heavyweight Wrestling Champion, defeating Joe Stecher in two straight falls, in 52 and 13 minutes respectively.

POLAND'S FOREIGN MINISTER RESIGNS.

Warsaw; May 27.

Prince Sapiehas has tendered his resignation as Minister for Foreign Affairs, which has been accepted.

The feature of Chesterfields is that they

begin where other cigarettes leave off.

In other words, besides pleasing the taste, Chesterfields go them all one better-they satisfy! Just like a long drink of cold water satisfies when you're thirsty.

No other cigarette can give you this new enjoyment because none can copy Chester- field's blend.

It's a blend of the finest TURKISH tobaccos from Xanthi, Cavalla, Smyrna and Samsoun and several varieties of the choicest American. And the blend itself the skill with which these tobaccos have been proportioned-is a real discovery in cigarette. making.
