THE PORT OF SEATTLE, At a

banquet tendered to officials of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha line in Seattle, Mr. M Watanabe, manager of the Seattle branch, said: "The new Pier B. As everyone knows, is really & wonderful enterprising project the greatest wharf the world has. ever seen. This great terininal is without doubt the result of the energetic efforts of the Port Com- missioners, but at the same time it should be taken as a sign of the the enterprising spirit of the citizens of Seattle to bring this city to the fore as one of the greatest seaports of the world. While other cities are claiming their superiority on paper, the Port of Seattle has realized her great enterprise as a seaport and has completed the building of th greatest pier in the world. Seatl is the natural gateway of hy great American continent to the marvelous wealth of the Orient It possesses far superior advant- ages on every point; in its near- ness to the Orient; in its wonder- ful. transcontinental railway systems; in its perfect natural harbour; in its cheaper price of coal, etc. No one can seriously deny the fact that Seattle is the major port of the Pacific Const and destined to be the centre "of" the Oriental trade of the United States. More transportation and mora trade that is what we want. As you, welcome the Japanese ships coming into your port, Japan will welcome Your ships at her ports. I earnest- ly hope these two nations will go together arm in arm, for the development of trade in the Pacific between Occident and Orient, and I have every confidence that they will.
