FUEL IN STEEL-MAKING, At the last meeting of the Sheffield Association of Metallurgists and Metallurgical Chemists the subject of gas fuel s el-making was discussed. A paper was read by Pro. Wheeler, of Sheffield University, on "The Composition of Gaseous Fuel in Relation to the Processes of Steel Manufacture." Pro, Wheeler said producer gas, mainly used In steel production,

merits of hydrogen and carbon- monoxide. The properties could best be controlled by the use of more or less steam with the air- blast of the furnace. This ad. boen a matter of long controvér. y. and he gave the particulars of the behaviour of the constituent gases in order to help to dater- mine the relative values. A good indication of the value of gas was obtained from knowledge of the speed of the propagation of the flame in its mixture with air during the uniform movement which was obtained when a mixture at rest within a long, straight tube, open at one end, was ignited at the open end. Fame traveled at a uniform speed for a considerable distance. The Professor then presented curves an 1 diagrams to illustrate his theory, Ha concluded that on all counts hydrogen stood condemned as a furnace fuel. Still, it was passible that a gas high in hydrogen might under some con-itions be cheaper per ton of steel than a gas produced without st am.
