LANSING STATEMENT-
CRITICISED.
Former U.S. Secretary Of State Is Roughly Handled For Views On Peace Conference.
If the publication just issued in the United States by Mr. Lansing. former Secretary of State, is as it is reported to be in its state- tments regarding Japan, and the actions of the Japanese at the Peace Conference, "it is altoget- har too crude and uncultured to deserve any format reply from the Japanese Foreign Office," is the opinion of one of the foreign attaches in Tokyo, quoted in a statement sent out by Kokusai, while it is confidently asserted in well-informed circles that the Japanese Foreign Office will attempt no reply and will make no comment on the Lansing statemente.
In official circles the allega- tions made by Mr. Lansing are described as "wildly fantastic, but very stupid."

AIMING AT WILSON.
"The assault appears to have been made upon the former Pre- sident of the United States Dr. Woodrow Wilson-by his former Secretary of State and friend, over the shoulders of the Am- bassadora from Japan.
"If it he as reported, it is al- together rude, brutal, and most. certainly not deserving the dignity of an official reply.
"The charge of 'blackmail," said to have been brought by the dismissed Secretary against Prince Saionji, Count Chinds and Viscount Makino, cannot damage their reputations. shake the confidence of, nor alter the high esteem, in which they were held by their assocciates in the Great Council of Ten at Paris.
"The thinking public in Europe. America, Japan or China, will Dof be thus bludgeoned into insensibility to reason, logic, and straight thinkirig, by an outburst. which can only reflect discredit
HONGKONG, CANTON & MACAO upon the author."

LANSING'S WORD ACCEPTED.
The declaration of Viscous.. Makino, in connection with the statement of ex-Secretary Laneing concerning the Shantung question,.. made in his HOW tamous publication, Peace Negotiation," has produced no echo in America. Viscount Makino has declared that Japan Dover resorted to blackmailing it connection with the Shantung problet. but the fact that his statement is entirely ignored in America, indicates that Mr. Lansing's statement is accepted at least so far as the Shantung question is con- cerned.
It is expected that Mr. Lansing will make some further explana- tion to refute the decisration of Viscount Makino. Probably Mr. Lansing will go into details regarding the interviews between him and Viscount
Maki no and Count Chinda which he says took place on April 21 and
1919.
