THE COAL STRIKE,

London, April 22. Mr. Lloyd George has invited the Miners Executive to meet him | this afternoon.

The coal strike situation assumed a new development this morning in consequence not only of the mine owners but of the miners promptly accepting a short notice invitation from the Frime Minister to meet him at the Board of Trade in the afternoon. After the delegate conference the miners assembled to reconsider the position in consequence of last week's happenings. The conference subsequently adjourned till to-morrow, after passing a vote of confidence in the Secretary, Mr. Hodges, and the executive, and a resolution protesting against the official explanation calling off the Triple Alliance strike, recording the belief that the real cause of the sudden, unexpected and unfortunate withdrawal must be looked for in the character and structure of the Triple Alliance. It was stated that reports from districts showed complete unanimity on the demand for a national wages board and a national pool.

The Premier's letter of invitation to the mine owners and miners to the Board of Trade Conference referred to their recent statements in the Press, as already cabled, and other suggestions by newspaper correspondents which, he opined, might lead to a re- sumption of negotiations. The shortness of notice is due to his having to meet M. Briand during the weekend. Contrary to an earlier announcement no military officers will attend the Lympne Conference.

TROTZKY'S BOAST.

London, April 22.

A Helsingfors telegram states that Trotzky, addressing the students passing out of the Military School at Moscow, boasted that the Red Army was now composed of millions of men, that the output of munitions was greatly increasing and that in the summer he intended to investigate the possibility of an offensive in the East and a war of revenge against Poland. Meanwhile, Red Troops are apparently unable to suppress the insurgents in Siberia and the Ukraine. Bolshevist journals admit the situation in Siberia is serious and state that orders have been telegraphed to the Soviets in Siberia to hire Chinese troops and German and Austrian war prisoners to fight the insurgents.

THE YAP DISPUTE.

New York, April 21.

It is understood, that at a meeting of the Communications Con- ference, Japan and France accepted the American principles with regard to the distribution of the ex-German cables. An early agree- ment with regard to the details of the operation of the cables, is expected, but it is stated that the actual distribution of the Pacific cables will be deferred until the status of Yap is determined.

London, April 22.

The "Daily Mail" correspondent at New York reports that Mr. J. Daniels, in a speech at Memphis, declared the United States could not surrender the cable rights of Yap, even at the cost of war.

The Government has refused Germany's request that President Harding mediate on reparations, but agreed that if Germany presents a proper basis for discussion the Government will consider bringing the matter to the attention of the Allies “in a manner acceptable to them in order that negotiations may speedily be résumed."
