THE DECREASING COAL OUTPUT,

EXPLANATION BY A MINERS' LEADER.

Undoubtedly one of the most disappointing features of the coal industry is the decreasing output, saya a mining correspondant of a Home paper. When the Prime Ministar met representatives of the miners in the closing days of March he emphasised the neCOS- sity for an increased output, and having intimated's minimum in- crease of $3 per day to adults who were paid ixed wages, and a percentage adrance to piece- warkers, he made a powerful appeal to miners' leaders to use thair influence with the miners to increase the working time in districts where only ten days a fortnight were worked.

Nothing has been done in the direction suggested, and, the Government's weekly returns of the past two months have been such as to cause great anxiety among coalowners and mer- chants. For the week ending April 24 the output was 4,989,650 & MANILA.

THE OUTCOME OF CLASS WAR.

If Mr. Vernon Hartshorn, M.P., one of the miners' leaders, is to be accepted as an authority, the reduced output is a symptom of the "classwar" which has been waged. Writing in South Wales newspaper, Mr. Hartshore states that so long as there was of nationalisation the hope miners leaders "used their in-over fluence in urging the men to pro :” and be added duce more coal: that "if nationalisation is brought into existence that infinence will
