THE PASSING OF UMS."RENT"
On Sunday, July 4th, the famous cruiser, HM.S. "Keat." stripped of all her guns, mountings, auxiliary machinery and valuable fittings, passed out of 15% loyal Navy and was Sic transit towed away from the Naval anchorage in Hanggang Harbour to be broken up, gloria mundi. Her career has been a glorious one. It was on Lecember Sth, 1914, that the Keat commanded by Captain J. D. Allen, and forming one of the ships of Admiral Sir Daveton Stardee's Squadron, took part in the battle of the Falkland Island, which resulted in the destruction of the German Squadron commanded by, Admiral Grai Von Spee. The Kent's" share in the battle was to chase and engage the German Cruiser "Nurnberg." Although the "Nurnberg" was a 25-knot ship and the "Kent" only a 31-knot cruiser she worked up lu 22 knots, and when her coal gave out kept steam by burning har basts, arm chairs and all available woodwork in the ship's furnaces. By these meads she got up to a speed of 24 knots, and caught up the "Nurnberg" and sank her after a stiff fight. Photo shows the "Kent" being towed away to be broken up.
