TURKISH CRISIS.

London, March 5.

The fall of the Turkish Cabinet "nd the calling of Izzet Pasha to form a fabinet has aggravated the seriousness of the Turkish crisis. It is noteworthy is the recall of Izett, notorious hitherto as Abdul Hamidis evil genius. He was the instigator of the appalling massacres of Armenians vader Hamid's rule and is now the Nationalist nominee for the Premiership. Meanwhile it may be taken for granted that if official reports from Turkey confirm the accounts of the massacres, Allied forces will be despatched immediately. It is stated moreover that the Armenians will be provided with arms while as regards future safeguards it is noteworthy that a proposal is now being considered that the future Turkish gendarmerie be offered by the Allies. Influential Europeans from: Constantinople have informed the British Govertneri that Turkey will not accept the drafted Treaty and that the temper of the Nationalists is stiffening, owing to the decision to leave the Turks in Constanople.

London, March 1.

It is feared that serious labour troubles have broken out in Japan. The situation is obscure owing to the absence of authentic particulars, but Reuter has bad

& Tokio message which confirms that the Diet dissolved owing to differences on the question of universal suffrage. The occasion was marked by great uproar in the streets.

It is noteworthy hereanent that there is an unconârmed report that a detachment of Japanese troops in Siberia have gone over to the Bolshevists.

RICE IN CEYLON.

PROTEST AGAINST GOVERN- MENT PROFITEERING.

Colombo, January 20.-Con- sequent on the price charged by the Government of India for Rangoon rice supplied to Ceylon the price, in Colombo has in- creased from to-day 55 to 60 per cept. or about Rs. 4 per bushel. The, "Times of Ceylon" comment. ing states:

This increase is due not to the operation of A IT inexorable economic law but merely to the most shameful profiteering by the Government of India at the ex- pense not merely of strangers but of a neighbouring country and a unit of the British Empire inhabit- ed by people linked by the closest ties of blood, kinship, religion and history with the people, of India. "Lisbon is in ruins and people dance at Paris!"

How much more painful than the incongruity which struck Voltaire is the spectacle of India at the present moment with her overflowing granaries demanding for rice the last penny she can out of the famine-stricken poor!); of a little neighbouring Colony of the British Empire, basing her action on the monstrous technical fiction that it is a foreign country,

Contrast this with the unutterably mean and huckster-i ing policy of the Government of India in Elling its coffers by dearing out of its plentiful har- vest the necessaries of life to the same kind of fellow-subjects of the King-Emperor except at a price which will spread starvation throughout the length and breadth of this country and justifying its action by the accident that it is not administratively

The Government of India. therefore. propose to make a profit well over 100 per cent. This is the Government of India's! contribution to the solidarity and unity of the Epire. This is its reading of the spirit of ⚫times."

SIR OLIVER LODGE CHALLENGED.

AMERICAN SCEPTIC'S

OFFER.

the

Interest in spiritualism has been revived by the lectures in New York of Sir Oliver Lodge, and the American Society for Psychical Research, of which Professor James Hyslop is an officer appeals for an endowment for research work.

Mr. Joseph E. Rinn now comes out with a challenge to all med- iums. Mr. Rinn was formerly & member of the Society for Psychical Research, and took a large part in the exposure of Palladino, when that famous demonstrator of spiritualism come to America with endorsem- ents from Lodge, Flammarion, Lombroso, and other eminent scientists."

He offere £1,000 to the society, as part of the endowment it is asking as the basis of having further frauds perpetrated apon it," if the society, Sir Oliver Lodge, or anyone else can produce a medium who is able to offer, under scientific conditions, the slightest tecable evidence of com-: munication with the spirit world, or supernatural feats of any kind. Mr. Rinn offers an additional £1,000 if Bir Oliver Lodge him- self will meet this simple test, and proclaims himself ready to give Sir Oliver slate messages, or any; other kind of messages from his son Raymond, under the precise condiditions, in which "he thinks he got them from psychics' in England."

It is not an assertion, but a fact in history, Mr. Rinn says, that great men of science are the easiest dupes in the world for clever fakers.
