Handicapped with a broken rud- der, Canton's victory was all the greater in the Double Sculls erent, in which there were three crews -from the Royal Navy, the R. H. K. Y. C. and the Canton Rowing Club. Managing as best they could in keeping a straight course without the help of a

THE ROWING REGATTA.

Much interest was centred in: The Mixed Double Sculls for which there were two entries:- Mrs. Hunt (cox), Miss Hewitt, and Contumander N. A. Wodehouse: and Miss Duff (cox). Mrs. Drew and Mr. Mackenzie. This wasi an impromptu race, no previous! preparation being made by either crew. Much cheering punctuat- el the close of the race when Mrs. Hunt's boat effected an easy vie cory. The Canton team was not so fortunate as in their provious efforts. in the Pair Oars event. which was held over a mile course. The Club's crew comprised V. G. Smyth (bow), J. S. McCann (stroke), and H. W. B. Keanett (cox while the Canton Club was represented by J. Huxley (bowl. P. A. Dixon (stroke) and A. Hotson (cox). This race proved to be an easy one for the Hongkong crew, who assumed the lead a the early part of the course and maintained it till the finish.

The Single Sculls was a failure i so far as Hongkong was concerned. Major Sturgess was simply left be bind and did not finish his course.) The Dragon Boat race arranged by Ah King was 2 source of Amusement to the spectators. The capability of the Chinese crews in making a good rythmic stroke being commented upon.

The prizes were destributed at the conclusion of the races by. Mrs. Frank Smyth, who was pre- sented with a beautiful bouquet. On behalf of his wife, Mr. Smyth. in a few appropriate words. returned thanks to the Committee) for the honour they had done her and assured them that she highly) appreciated the honour, not only a personal one, but as a tribute to the sex which had Contributed so much to the success of the sports. The win- ning by the Canton Rowing Club of two of the challenge cups would, he hoped, stimulate the Royal Hongkong Yacht Club to greater efforts.
