$8,000 CHILDREN.

THE WORK OF

DR. BARNARDO'S HOMES.

Between 50 and 60 years ago a young medical student took upon himself to open a small high- school in the heart of Stepney, His schoolroom was an old disused scholars the donkey-shed, his ragged ri-riff of the East End. and in teaching those urchins of his their lessons he contrived unexpectedly to learn his own.

Thus a small outcast lingering by the fire in a Stepney shied-a seemingly chance word-a question the desire to verify its answer-one night's experience -and the consequent conception of a work destined to help in half a century over $8,000 destitute children.

The Barnardo family to-day number 7,291 boys and girlssland 30 others are admitted every week from the ranks of child- destitution and misery all over the country.

The Homes are lifting the children out of the slums and giving them a good environment so that they may take their places in the world as healthy. upright. honourable, and God- fearing citizens.

The children are the Nation's and indeed the Empire's. greatest

esset.

No destitute little one seeks aid in vain. Dr. Barnardo's Homes have to waiting list: no votes are required: there is no red tape.

88,607 children have passed through the Ever-Open Doors in the past half-century--8,470 since war broke out. What would have become of these children but for Barnardo's ?

In a booklet which has reached us dealing with, this work, the artist has pictured the Homes as a Magician's Palace with two big open doors. To one comes a ceaseless stream of destitute little ones; from the other a stream goes out of Healthy, happy lads and lasses trained for the battle of life.

But the Magician needs" his wand, and the wand is Funds. Will you supply the funds to enable the Homes to give help to every destitute child who needs it?

The Homes are relying upon their Christmas Appeal to main- ain the children during the Winter. For 10s. you can have the joy of feeling that you are feeding one destitute child for ten days.

Contributions may be sent to the Honorary Director, Mr. William Baker, M.A.. L...L.B. Dr. Barnardo's Homes. 18 to 26, Stepney Causeway, London, E. 1. Cheques and Orders payable "Dr. Barnardo's Homes Food Bill Fund." and crossed. (Treasury Notes should be Registered.)

A CRUEL HOAX.

O

300 PEOPLE ANSWER BOGUS ADVERTISEMENT.

A cruel hoax was perpetrated on people seeking houses by means of a bogus advertisement in . newspaper offering tu let a residence in Lewisham. Some 300 people answered per sonally the advertisement, which was as follows:

House to Let select quarter: 8 roums, bath h. and c.; every con- venience. Apply personally R. E. Norfolk, 12 Eastdownpark, S. E., between the hours of 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., 5th inst.

Mrs. E. G. Hitson, wife of the tenant, who has no intention of leaving the house, and knew nothing of the advertisement, declared to a member of The Daily Smrs staff that whoever was relponsible for the hoax should be severely punished. "It was altogether too bad." she said. "I was very sorry for the sailors and soldiers and ex-service men. One of them told me he had just come out of the Army after 23 years' service,

"People came long before the hours stated in the advertisement. One woman arrived from some- where down in Surrey quite early in the day. At dusk applicants were getting so numerous that in desperation I-put a card on the front door with the word 'Let' on it. At six o'clock there was a queue, and some of the people protested against the house being let before the stated hour. I ex- plained that it was let, that it had not recently been to let, that we had no intention of leaving, and that the whole thing was the work of some practical joker. They took it in very good part.'

Inquiries made on Mr. Ritson's behalf at the newspaper office show that the advertisement was sent with postal order. There was nothing to suggest that it was not genuine. The hand-f writing is very neat and looks like that of a junior boy clerk.

P. AND O. BANK.

London, Jan. 28. " It is authoritatively announced that the issue of the pro- spectus of the Peninsular and Oriental Banking Corporation, of which Lord Inchcape is clairman, has been postponed until April at the request of Mr. Chamberlain that all new issues be held over until the Government bonds are out of want. The Peninsular and Oriental Company, also Lloyd's, the London and County and Westminster and the National and Provincial Banks are participating in the issue with certain preference in favour of stockbilders of the Grst-named company. The head offices will be in London and it is intended gradually to open up hasiness at the ports where the P. and O. and its allies operate in the East and Australia and elsewhere. The authorised capital is five millions sterling. two millions paid up. The Bank will offer increased facilities to British trade over the whole world.

BINDING THE EMPIRE.

London, Jan. 2s.

Attempts are now being made to curry out a flight-from London to the Cape viu Uniro. The first machine a Vickers- Viny, has reached the, South of France and is proceeding to Egypt. The second,, an Aireo, starts immediately while the third, manned by South Africans, will probably leave next week. The Times," in the course of a leader pointing out the great part aviation must play in the future of the Empire. says: "To us, more perhaps than any other nation, the proper use of the aeroplane for peaceful unds is of the most vital importance for vommunication with the outlying parts of the Empire and with India, Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. It would be difficult to over-estimate the importance of the possibilities that will be opened up by the Empire air rouges already surveyed, with as that from Cairo te the Cape and others still to be organised. There is a vast amount of pioneer work to be done before these routes can be upen to ordinary divilian passengers 6r. to statesmen, mer. elants and commercial travellers to whom time is an urgent facto-but, difficult and dangerous as the work is bound to be, imast and will is done for within the Empire nothing else. not even the personal magnetism of the Prince of Wales, will prove more valuable as an instrument not only for the an- nihilation of time and space but for drawing ever closer the ties of sympathy and mutual understanding which bind together the mother country and the Doremony.

WIRELESS MYSTERY.

London, Jan. 27.

Chey. Marteni describes in the Daily Mail" an extraor dinary series of sounds wirelessly picked up throughout the world and thinks it possible they may emanate from another planet

Scientists are sceptical regarding the suggestion of the "Daily Mail that other planets are attempting to com municate with the earth by wirelesa. Tiley generally attribute the mysterious sounds to solar and magnetic disturbances.

KING FOR HUNGARY.

Berlin, Jan 27

A message froin Budapest says the Christian Socialists and Peasants Party which advocated the reestablishment of the monarchy have secured an overwhelming majority at the Hungarian elections largely owing to the Social Democrats and Radicals abstaining. The National Assembly will decide who is to be the future monarch- It is believed that Fiace Otto, the eldest son of the Emperor Kari, will be chosca.

COMMERCIAL RELATIONS WITH RUSSIA.
