ANGLO-FRENCH ~ FRIENDSHIP,
REFLECTIONS OF THE
PRESIDENT'S VISIT.
!!
The Paris correspondent of the Times, writing on November 16, ramarked
Now that the cheering of the crowds has died away it is possible to study from the practical point of view the effect of President Poincare's visit to Great Britain.
The visit 35 intended to emphasize and to strengthen in after-war politics that Franco- British union which had been sealed in action on the battle front. Thanks to the increased. efficiency of democratic expres- sion, M. Poincare has been able, as I have the best reason to know, to realize how cordial and how deep-seated is the feeling of admiration in Great Britain for France and all that Frenchmen have done throughout the war. Ás the King and M. Poincare drove through the streets of London than once the King drew M. Poincare's attention to a "Vive Poincare!" which could only have been uttered by a Frencbmas. The President could notice too the complete amalgam of all those French voices and the British voices of welcome throughout the route from the Palace to the station where he took train for Glasgow. To him it represented in civilian life the unity in action at the front of the French and the British soldier.

It is in the welcome given to him in London and in the trem- endous warmth of his reception by the youth of Scotland that M. Poincare sees the solid popular sympathy which is going strengthen that Anglo-French friendship which was so sincere during the war, It is safe to say that nothing gave your guest greater pleasure during his visit tban the official statement that all political objections to the Channel Tuncel had been remov- ed. It is hard to imagine that military opposition can still delay the construction of this essential link of the League of Nations. which France will take as a very sincere earnest of our trust and friendship.

international visit M. Poincare will pay as President of the French Republic, and when its history comes to be written it may he found that it was not the least important. In three months' ime M. Poincare will give up the Elysee to his successor. But, unlike his predecessors, he does not intend to withdraw into the Indeed, of oblivion. shades be considers that it is much more in keeping with the democratic spirit of the times that a Presi- dent who still enjoys vigorous menbood should return to bear his part in the political struggle M. Poincare was of his country. Provincial Councillor of the Meuse and Senator for that Department when he was elected to the highest office of the Re public.
Constitutionally he is debarred from holding any office save that of President, and when he seeks to re-enter political life he will again have to go through the the turmoil of election. The Sen- ate elections will be over a few days before his term as President expires. He will therefore bave to wait either.for a vacancy or for the creation of a vacancy before re- turning to public life. For near ly eight years as Prime Minister and as President he has been denied what is to him the supreme pleasure of travel. He intends to profit by his enforced absence. from public affairs to see as much of the world as possible before the bolted doors of politics: close round him again.
Judging from his enthusiastic appreciation of his English and his Scottish welcome, it may well be hoped that a great part of his Wander-Year may be spent in
Great Britain. He hopes to be able to revisit 8entland with the leisure of a private individual.
A FORT FOR SALE...
Fosterdown Fort, at White Hill, near Caterham, has been trans- ferred by the War Office to the Surplus Government Property Department, and is to be offered for sale. It is one of a chain built many years ago along the Surrey Hills for the defence of London. It commands extensive views over Surrey, Busser, and Kent, being nearly 800 feet above sea level. The guns were re- moved about 15 years ago, and the fort has been obsolete, but during the recent war it was used as stores by the God- stone Bombing Bchool. The property includes about ten acres of land, and two dilapidated
