It is claimed that she is the first Australian woman to take the certificate.

A PLAGUE OF SEALS. Fishing in the Wash was recently being adversely affected by the depredations of seals, which, according to the annual report of the Inspector of Eastern Sea Fisheries, ars in greater number than

The sandbanks, which are usually bars after ebb-tide, may be seen covered with seals and their young, resembling, in the distance large flocks of sheep. At one time the Fisheries Com- mittee put a price on the heads. of seals and numbers were killed, the grant of 10s. making it worth while to hunt the animals down, These payments. however, have for some time been stopped, and since then the seals have been Jeft to breed as they will, and the fishing suffers in consequence.
