Daring the Boer War Colonel Edward Ward, in charge of sup- plies, was described by General White, of Ladysmith, as "the best commissariat officer sinca Moses,"

During the more recent war that record was far surpassed by devices organised, in the very desert where Moses himself was enabled to draw food from the heavens and water from "the dry rock in a thirsty land.".

In 1913 the Government found great difficulty in securing the supply of water pipes necessary. to the conduet of the war in Egypt, when it was decided that an advance must be made across the Sihai Desert, and they called upon the services of the firm of iron and steel manufacturers known to the trade as "R., D. and C. Ltd."

The quantity involved was 180 miles in 3 to 8 inch pipe, with all necessary fittings. This neces- sitated two complete shiploads of material

Within five days of the request. practically every pipe of this size existent in Great Britain, U.S.A., and Canada had been secured by this company.

Even this was insufficient, and the shortage was actually roade up by the firm securing upwards of 2,000, tons of German tubes.

Complications were introduced into the job by reason of the varia tion, not only of thread, but of diameter, some pipes being measured in to out, some intern- ally and others externally.

All of these bad to be adapted to fit in with fittings which were entirely to British dimensions and threads.

The position became so involved that ultimately a member of the firm went out himself with the pipes. On arrival, he was re- quested by the Commander-in- Chief to undertake the actuall laying of the system in the desert.

The work of stevedoring the steamers, securing or manufactur- ing supplies of tools, transporting pipes into the desert, creation of workshops. &c.. made the jch one of intense interest. When it has to be considered that in this, the, first section of the advance into
