The Kobe Chamber of Commerce has already received inquiries from a certain leading sundry goods mer- cbant in London, asking for the names of the leading Japanese toy manufacturers, samples, etc. It is said that the Chamber has referred the matter to the Depart- ment of Home Affairs. With reference to the proposed bridge from Johore to Singapore, it is stated that the cost of the APPLICATION forms work is estimated at £1,000,000, Membership of the above and it will take five years to com- plete. An immense impetus to trade will be afforded by this new development. Two million tons of granite will be required. To enable ships to continue to pass the Straits after the causeway has been built, a lock will be built on the Johore side. The length between sills will be 170 ft., width 32 ft., and depth of water on sills 10 ft. at low tide. Electric power will be used in operating the various sluices and for working the lock gates. A rolling lift bridge, alsooperated by electricity, will carry the road and railway Over the lock.

BRITISH COAL OUTPUT. The British Board of Trade returns with reference to the coal output for the week ended Sep- tember 6 show a distinct im- provement. The total for the United Kingdom was 4,509,803 tons, which is an increase of 150,- 000 tons on the previous week. It is, however, still one millions tous per week behind, the average output for the year 1913. Unfortunately, South Wales cannot claim to be responsible for the gain, for the output in that district was nearly 16.000 tons down on the 'week. Yorkshire seems to have provid- ed the major portion of the in- crease. As the export trade of the country so largely depends upon South Wales. it is to be hoped that the workers in that district will soon emulate the ex- ample of the other miners of Great Britain.
