SCOTLAND YARD AND THE

LINER MYSTERY.

Further investigation in Lon- don of the disappearance from the steamship Merkara of £70,000 worth of diamonds, which wara being dispatched from London to Colombo, produces an unusually mysterious story. Scotland Yard have few facts to work upon, and no satisfactory explanation has yet been evolved.

The stolen gems were sent by Mesara. Kino Brothers of Holborn riaduct, E.C.. to their branch in Colombo, in five packets, which were registered at the Post. Office and insured at Lloyd's.

They were taken with other raails from Mount Pleasant Post- office to the Royal Albert Docks by train, and there went aboard the Merkara, a large vessel own- ed by the British India Steam Navigation Company There: being no strong-room on the ship. the mails were placed in the hold above general cargo.

At Bombay it was found that a number of. canvas mail bags had been ripped open and the packets of diamonds had gone.

When the vessel returned to London on Saturday detectives made a thorough examination of her but they are handicapped by the long period that has elapsed since the stones disappeared.

In conversation with a Daily Chronicle representative, one of the heads of the Investigation Department of the Post Office scouted the suggestion that the jewels had been stolen - before they were placed on the Merkara. He argued that the ripping open of the mail-bags could only have been done at sea, and the ship's officers appeared satisfied that the packages were in order when they came aboard.

On the other hand, the difficul- ties nowaday of obtaining pas- sages made it unlikely that experienced thieves could have made arrangements quickly enough to have been able to travel on the boat. The ohly. suggestion he could offer was that the thief was a member of the crew.

So far the spectacular side of Rat Week, says a Home paper, bas been a little disappointing. The secret methods of the rat chemist who works quietly in his laboratory and invents deadly poisons have ousted the bludgeon- ing tactics of the old-times rat- catcher. The thirsty habits of the rat are being exploited by rat chemists with good results. In South London there is a well- known laboratory where a corps of chemists" are employed in rearing poison microbes by the million.

Hunting for a rat hunt proved nearly as exciting as the actual warfare itself. Rats were not being hunted in the cpen on a grand scale, but were being secretly poisoned with microbes and sent to their doom in their holes, and even in sewers and drains. Rat hunts on a small scale were fairly common in Bermondsey and Poplar and other places where the food of the nation is warehoused. The Port of London Authority has

rat crusade of its own. It is engaged in a perenni- al warfare against the rat, and kills thousands of them all the year round.

The campaign rouses more en- thusisam in the suburbs, where rat hunts were organised with success. As was foreshadowed the rat is showing desperate traps. cunning in avoiding Authentic stories of their in- telligence come from all parts of the country. More evidence as to how rats steal eggs is sent by a Northern reader.

'I once sat a hen in a clump of nettles upon eleven duck eggs he writes. Three days after- wards I noticed there were only ten. At dusk I saw the nettles move, and noticed a big rat tugg-l ing at something, and before long a second rat appeared, turned over upon Its back with an egg pressed against its body by its fore feet.
