KHAKI DREAMS.
SOME HOPES THAT HAVE NOT BEEN REALISED.
Mr. Trevor Allen writes to 1 the Daily Chronicle --
We were all idealists in the desolate dugout days. I can see my good comrade now, lolling back on his blankets with hands deep in pockets and eyes deep in dreams of a. future incredibly
remote.
"This khaki!" he would say with shoulder. How I begin to loathe its drabness, its sameness, its uncouthaess.
"But when we come out at the other end if ever we do-that'll be the time of redemption, O my soul! No more drab greys and browns and pepper-and-salt timi- dities, but glowing plum-colours, ambers, clarets, purples-in soft velvets, if you like. No stiff collars and formalities, but dazzle shirts loose at the neck, with Futurist scarf flowing hapha- zard."
And there's the matter of interior decoration," I would remark, wincing audibly at the cold. rough earth walls, "Men who've lived in rat-holes in the earth are going to demand some sort of beauty in the home when they get back. Patterned wall- paper must go; one doesn't want grotesques flowers and fruit and tendrils writhing about one's pictures like snakes about the head of a Medusa; one wants a rich soft-toned distemper that will suggest space and infinity, provide a background of eternity, as it were, to our creations of time.
And lace curtains, lace cur- tains! What are they, I ask you, but the petticoats of Mrs. Grandy? Rather cretonnes and casement cloths that will take sunlight be autifully from without and lamp- light from within, so that one's windows have souls like human eyes.
"As for pictures, necessity has already taught us one worthy lesson" and I ind cated some colour reproductions from an art magazine which we had pinned on to lengths of new sandbagging and hung on the bare walls.
"Infinitely better than ponder- ous gilt frames and chili paper mounts!" he would enthuse. "My pictures when I get back shall be axed on to lengths of straw-coloured cloth, in a 'similar
manner.
"I'm not sure I'll go as far as that." I had replied, "but certainly not beyond the narrow bead frame of "passe-partout' binding.. And my white mounts shell become pipe-spills. With land- scapes, particularly, one should have the illusion of looking out through a window from a shaded room."
Dreams, dreams, my comrade! That incredible future has be- come the actual present what then? You come to me in dark grey suit, starched collar. and trousers unquestionably baggy at the knee; I to you in light grey suit, formal tie, and trousers somewhat whiskery at the bottoms. Snakes writhe about your pictures, which are fixed on "to plain brown paper, and the petticoats of Mrs. Grundy flap at your window. My walls have ce tainly the distemper, but more in the canine sense than any other, for they are blotchy and mottled; and white mounts still shriek at me from my pictures.
Things are so difficult to get and expensive, you ex- tenuate. "I tried half a dozen shops the other day for a dark- coloured. Morrissy sort of shirt with loose collar, and all the satisfaction I could get, even when I asked that one be specially made, was 'They re not worn now, sir, but perhaps this one? &z¢. &¢***
"C'est la Paix!" I reply. Jaconically, "as Wilson and one or Iwo others unfortunately
ound out."

KIEL CANAL INCIDENT.
J
Berlin, Dec. 7.
A semi-oficial message states that while the British steamer, St. Helena, was anchored at Holtenau Locks, Kiel Canal, a man aboard escaped. A British patrol pursued and fired at hin German troops occupied the Locks and police from Kiel boarded the steamer. They found German war prisoners en route to Danzig to be forcibly incorporated in the Polish Legion. They bad been selected from prisoners' camps in England in account of their Polish names. It was pointed out the men were in German waters and therefore no longer prisoners. The captain of the St. Helena, under protest, released to who did not wish to remain; about £fty to a hundred remained and proceeded to Danzig. The German Government has protested most vig rously to the Inter Allied Naval Commission at the infraction of German sovereignty and the armistice involved by the passage of a steamer through the Canal with German prisoners and crews and the use of Brearms,
SCAPA FLOW.
Berlin, Dec. 6.
The full text of Admiral Trotha's letter of Dec. 3 is fficially published with addenda declaring the purpose of the communication was rather to admonish the crews who were uneasy about their personal fate to continue to hold out. There is no hint of forcibly solving the future fate of the ships: contrariwise the entire letter is based on the iden that in accordance with the intention of the German Ad- miralty this question should be solved by way of negotia The statement re-contends that Admiral Reuter was d to order the sinkings purely by the assumption that the Armistice had expired.
