GERMANY AND THE BOXER INDEMNITY.

In the House of Commons, replying to Sir Frederick Hall, Mr. Harmsworth stated that by Article 1 of the Peace Treaty Germany was called on to renounce her share of the Boxer Indemnity, but as Chine had not signed the Treaty with Germany it would not be possible for the Allies to enforce the execution of Germany's obligations to China as contemplat- ed in the Treaty, such as cancellation of the Boxer Indemnity, as long as China withheld her signature. By Article 113 of the Peace Treaty with Austria, where to Ching was a party. Austria renounced her share of the Indemnity.

GIANT POLE NEARLY TOPPLES OVER.

After many years of travel and adventure the huge flagstaff presented by the Government of British Columbia was safely erected in Kew Gardena on ። recent afternoon, the final heave on the hoisting tackle being given at 3.55 p..

An exciting, incident occurred during the last few minutes of the balsting. The mast was practi- cally upright, and needed but a slight further baul on the wire ropes to make it plumb straight. This horever was an operation requiring great delicacy of judg- ment from the

manager of Messrs. Conbro and Scrutton, the contractors, under whose charge the work was conducted.

A small group of riggers stood on one side of the knoll, upon which the staff stands, ready to make the final heave. On the other side was another group of riggers manipulating the stay which prevented the mast from losing its balance once it had been bauled upright. At the base of the mast stood the manager, directing both groups of men. The word was then given to pull. į The blocks creaked, the mast trembled, and the next instant a cry of warning from one of the riggers by the stay rope startled the spectators..

The manager rushed down to the point of danger, and was told a bull-dog clip connecting up the stay rope was slipping. This constituted a "threat of disaster, for if the clip failed to hold the mast was in danger of toppling over in the opposite direction to which it had been raised and bringing down with it the atten- dant derrick.

A rigger was sent at swarming up the stay rope to tighten the clip, it was the work of a few moments for safety to be assured. Returning to the base of the flagstaff the manager been found true plumb had attained. and the mast was safely In position.

STORY.

A judicial, which is so far being kept secret by the police, i now taking place with reference to the necklace of the Empress Marie Louise, second wife of Napoleon I. This necklace, val ied at £200,000, was presented by Napoleon to the Empress on the birth of the King of Rome and remained in the possession of the Imperial Court of Austria. The attemptio dispose of it makes a strange and interesting story, which goes back to the beginning: of 1914. At that time the Austrian | Court was keenly interested in the movement in Portugal for restoring King Manoel to his throue. The late Emperor Francis Joseph was anxious to help the partisans of this movement, and when the question of monetary support arose, he is credited with having conceived the idea of sell- ing a number of Crown jewels, including the collection which belonged to the Empress Marie Louise

Those who had the sale of the jewels in hand gotinto touch with a lady of high position residing in Paris. This lady was counsell- ed to act with great circum-pec- tion. The sale if effected, had to kept secret, and in order that news of the transaction should hot leak cut she was enjoin d not to sign any document or give a receipt for the money received. A casket of jewele, including the necklace of the Empress Marie Louise, arrived in Paris, and the lady invited a French diamond merchant to interst himself in finding a purchaser. It was found, however, that the persons approached were not anxious to pay £200,000 for the necklace, and that, indeed, they were not greatly interested in it. But s certain number of other jewels: in the casket were disposed of, and the money was handed to the lady who acted as in- termediary between the Court of Austris and

This lady has now instituted proceedings against the diamond dealer, alleging that he has kept a part of the proceeds of the BAIS. The diamond dealer, on the other hand, has declared, to M. Cluzel, examining magistrate, who is inquiring into rus affair, that he
