Since the termination of "the Armistice there has been in- creased acti' ity in the shipping circles in Far Eastern waters.: The overseas shipping services from Great Britain have now almost returned to normal, and the pre-war shipping programme of the large companies operating vessels to China and Japan has been resumed. Shipowners are, of course. handicapped to a great extent still, by the lack of avail- able tonnage.

America's shipping programme, which has perhaps been "most successful on the Pacific than anywhere else has materially aided to this. The Admiral Line, which recently opened offices here, is now the largest American shipping line operating vessele on the Pacific. The fleet of this com- pany is composed almost entirely of American Shipping Board cargo-ships and although up to the present, no pass-nger vessels are being operated, it will not be long before they will be and when this is the case, they will prove of great assistance in relieving the present conditions of travel on the Pacific. Shanghai, Hong- kong and Manila are the three chief ports in the Far East used as distributing centres for China. In the near future there may be
