ROMANCE OF FOUR MILLIONS,
STRANGE STORY OF IRISH CLAIM
The story of a romantic claim to an immense fortune-estimar ea a: about faur millions sterling. is sent to the Daily News from
an
at
Irish correspondent Athlone. One of the claimants. he sare is Mr. Patrick Quinn. who is nearly 80 years of age. and was at one time a member ofj the Athlone Council.
According
to documents which have arrived from America. he writes, "it seems that this vast amount-over 19 million dollars was left by Mr. Quina's uncle. Thomas Quinn. who was a soldier. Thomas Quint, it is stated, left, Ireland 95 years ago, having joined the Army. He lived for years in India, and shortly before the out- break of the Mutiny he bough: some land.
It is this land, it is said, which formed the nucleus of the big fortune, owing to the fact that valuable minerals have since been found upon it. Quinn re- turned afterwards to Ireland. at Miltown Malbay County Clare), where he died childless.) 30 years ago.
Those who are claiming a share of the wealth, in addition to Mr. Patrick Quinn, the nephew, are the families of two brothers settled at Chicago, and the children of a sister, named King of Kilmabil (County Clare).
"The nephew tells me that be remembered his uncle as a boy, and kept up a rather infrequent correspondence with him when he was in India. After he had settled down in Miltown Malbay." says Mr. Quinn. I visited him there. He died there, and left. after providing for his wife, all he possessed-not by any means a big fortune to his brother, Michael, who was never found.
***He never mentioned any- thing about land in India, con-j tinued the nephew.
'It may have escaped his memory owing to the outbreak of the Mutiny immediately afterwards, or he may have considered that the purchase was not likely to have turned out profitable.' 7

SOME INTERESTING
REFLECTIONS.
Lord Fisher, in his sixth and final article on the, Navy, in the Times.deals with the question. "Whom are we going to fight, and where?”
I have elsewhere propounded the view that Asia, which of old in one direction sent forth Moses and his multitude, will produce anther exodus into Europe and into the Western Hemisphere from the borders of the Pacific. That océan holds) the future. Every fourth baby born into the world is 2 Chinese. I have been many years in China and Japan. I have intense admiration for the inhabitants of both those countries. in the barbour of Malta with a box of matches If played Togo's decisive battle-a second Trafalgar-with Togo's Chief of Staff before that battle WDE fought. It
was
an obvious battle. But whom' are we go going to fight? Is it either a Chinese or Japanese Navy? I cannot conceive any earthly reason for such an event, and impossible is our fighting the United States. Το me" it is criminal even to talk of it. Can't the American and English Navies. dominate the world at any time? We simply ay to all the others. "Build no more or we fight, you. We will Copenhagen you bere and
now?"
It is population and self-con- tained resources that govern the, outcome of a war, in association with access to the ocean. The United States have all these. Well, what does all this lead to in determining our sea policy? The answer is peculiarly simple. I repeat again, what should be the British formula? Build few and build fast, each one better than the last. We shall thus get very cheaply and efficiently an airproof armada, ready for any service and fit for any eventuality.
