PREVENTING CRUELTY. “ According to a report of the Superintendent of the Shanghai Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals the following is the number of cases prosecuted during October:-Seven cases of convaying birds cruelly (5 fined, 2 cautioned); seven cases of ever- crowding birds (6 fined. 1 forfeit of binds); one case of conveying calves cruelly (Defendant abscond- ed and calves were forfeited).

BULL ON LIVE RAÍL. There was excitement on the London and South-Western Rail- way line recently. A bull rush- ed from the Nine Elms depot and ran up the line between the live rails. He received a slight shock as he came in contact with the f line, and this caused him to start running madly. When he had almost reached Clapham Junc- tion his career came to a sudden end. Blundering on the live rail he was instantly electrocuted. The current had to be cut off while the carcase was removed. and the traffic on the electric sys- tem was delayed for half an hour. "GIRL SOLDIER'S" STORY. Sapper" Dorothy Lawrence, the only English woman soldier. has written a book on her adren- tures as a Royal Engineer in the 51st Division in France. She says she joined the Army and saw service as a "tunneller under) fire. Meeting two British soldiers at a Paris cafe, she persuaded them to get her a uniform, cap. hadge, and puttees. She then wrote out a "pass" for herself. she says, and got a passport 10 Amiens, going there by rail, and cycling thence to Albert.
