Mr. Thos. J. McMahon, F.R.G.S., writes to the Observer:-- These islands, or atolls, astride the Equator, as it were, are exactly in the centre of the vast (ocean". space
known 19 the Central Pacific; they are termed the "Gateway of the Pacific." Fifty years ago they were better known to mariners than they are now, but they are again coming into prominence by the com- mercial value the Japanese have found they possess, and the eagerness by which Japanese trade is being ferced upon the native people, though they are British subjects. For many years the islands have been under British protection; five years ago. with the Ellice group, Ocean island, and several scattered groups of tiny islanda the whole WAS formed into the Gilbert and Ellice Crown Colony, and a full British administration set up. Tarawa,: the seat of Government, is a splendid instance of the energy of British officials. From a waste it has been turned into a pictur- esque station and town... with every modern convenience and comfort. From one end of the island to the other it is a'coco. nut plantation, laid out in the most systematic and regular fashion, and entirely in the bands of the natives, who are entitled to all proits-very considerable every year-after all'administra- tive expenses have been met.

The British ›dministration of the Gilberts is the admiration of the whole Pacific. It is the living example-the model indeed-of what common sense, firmness, and kindness can do with native peoples. What has been accom- plished in the Gilberts in the happiness and the progress of the people is now being followed by many, other administrations

In the days of forty years ago, when American whalers made the Gilberts their rendezvous, and many strange and wild sceries enacted, the Gilbert islanders were a race aggressive and blood- thirsty: they were constantly at war with their native neighbours. Then came the unscrupulous | German traders, who taught the natives the cres of powder and shot, and native kings amused themselves learning the art of marksmanship by trotting out their faithful subjects and shooting them in hundreds, just to become skilful with the old "Sneider" rifle. Coming in contact with the whites proved the undoing of the natives; disease and crime reduced their numbers, until ten years ago they were looked upon as y race doomed to extinction. Then the blessings of British administra- tion came to the rescue of the race, and to-day the Gilbert islands are progressive, the population increasing and healthy in a most remarkable manner. There is no section more loyal to King George in the British Empire than the natives, who gave hun- dreds of their best men to the war and thousands of pounds to various war funds, including one Scores of apparently hopeless cases natives.
