During the past four years tbe! American population of the city of Manila has decreased by 42.79 per cent. The 1914 sanitary. returns showed an American po- pulation of 5,769 while the 1918 figuress bow only 3,134 Ame- rican residents in the city. The; big decrease in the number of. Americans is due in the main to retirements from the insular government service.

NO WAGNER FOR PARIS. Paris, Aug. 23.-The open-air concert arranged to take place in the Tuileries Garden recently WEN forbidden by the police. Someone had written to the Pre- fect of Police complaining that the programme included select- ions from Wagner. To avoid a pos- sible disturbance the Prefect de- elded that the concert had better not take place. These concerts have been held regularly for several summers, Music by Wagner, Beethoven and Mozart has been frequently given since June 1918 without any objection being raised.

BEES HOLD UP TRAFFIC. A swarm of bees held up the traffic in the goods yard of Mossrs. Carter, Paterson at Horne-lane, Actor, recently for nearly two hours. The swarm which was a very large one, gathered in four groups over the gateway at the entrance to the yard, and the loud buzzing of the bees attracted a large crowd of passers-by. The drivers of vans approaching the. yard drew their vehicles up. afraid to cross the danger zone. Finally some allotment holders from the neighbourhood captured
