The King of Spain at Verdun, yesterday, laid a wreath of orchids in pious homage on French military graves. NO SENSE OF SPEED.
There is this disappointment about flight that it is entirely without the sense of speed. tumbling about in a two-seater is the heaven of exultation; but being a passenger in a Handley Page, steady as a rock and built with an eye on stability, is quite another pair of shoes.
Nevertheless, when all is said and done, to get from London to Paris in three or four hours is something of an achievement. No doubt improvements in theso big aerobuses will be many. more air, less noise, and a sense of the open-but London to Paris The pace seems like that of a in three or four bours-that's steamroller. SHIPPING SCANDALS.
Sir--I wish to contradict all you had to say in your Monday's issue under the heading "Ship- ping Scandals."
First the overloading question. There are three questions to which the public can tell you the answer without opening up the pages of your paper.
1. Why is it the "Sui Tai" and the "Sui An" now make but one trip to Macao?,
2. Why has the “Tai Lee “laid so long rusting away at Samize- poo?
3. Why is it the "Wing On" was placed on the H.K.-Canton run; then on the Macao-Canton run then back to the H.K.-Canton run?
All are aware, or ought to be, that our river.steamers have been carrying air mostly since the war began and not making enough to pay the coal bill, and yet you have the temerity to make the grave allegation that they overload.
On my first boarding to join one I was struck with the enormous amount of room taken with boats rafts, and life-saving gear, there being little or no room.left for a passenger to walk; and after see- ing what an innumerable amount of small craft is always around and about them while on their journey, I came to the conclusion that, if given a chance, I would advocate a reduction of this life- saving gear as an improvement. If trade becomes much woIBO, we shall beve to Bend few to Singapore with a load of life belts and boots to walk on-the... water, similar to those used by that famous Welshman who walked Swansea Bay with them on some six years ago.
