SHIPPING NEWS.
MORE BOATS FOR HONGKONG.
Los Angeles manufacturers and merchants have formed an as- sociation and decided to build eight ships to cater for their trade with the Far East. They are making Hongkong and Manila the chief parts of call of this fleet.
LARGE SHIP LAUNCHED. The Eastern Merchant, the
largest of the ships constructed in Japan for the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation, was launched at the yard of the Asano Shipbuilding Company, Limited, on October &
ENGINEER'S CERTIFICATE. The following candidate has been successful for his engineer certifcate of competency before the Board of Trade, Hongkong, during September C. E. W. Adams. First class engineer. There was one failure for second class engineer during the month.
DOCKYARD DIFFICULTIES. Small Japanese dockyards are now in difficulties owing to the greatly increased cost of building. These small dockyards are finding it difficult to make both ends meet in view of the fact that while their finances are limited, the prices of raw materials, such as iron, ara very high. They cannot secure sufficient supplies on the open market, as the sellers demand very high prices, about V.300
per ton.
MORE CLYDE SHIPS. The has been a gratifying in- crease in the Clyde shipbuilding output in August as compared with July. The aggregate ton-" nage has been 49,661 tons, repre- seating 22 vessels. as compared with July, when the aggregate was 28,886 tons for nine vessels. 28th Nov. (from Kobe). Only nine ships were launched in
July, but for the month August the total is 22, 11 cf which are for the Admiralty. Included in the new work in hand are nine large steamers that are being built by the Fairfield Com- pany, of Govan.
