OLYMPIC GAMES IN 1920

PROTEST BY FAMOUS

VANILETES

A letter signed by those two Igreat athletes, P. J. Baker, the Cambridge Bluey who did so much to ravive a taste for athletics on the banks of the Cam, and A. N. 5. Jackson, who, besides being the greatest miler Oxford bas produced; proved himself one of the most progressive organisers, and has gained great distinction during the war, appeared recently in the Times on the subject of the Olympic Games.

The writers are opposed to agy idea of holding Games next year. They point out that the Olympic Council would be ill-advised to press their decision in face of existing facts. It is both neces- sary and desirable," they say,

in all these ways to put our house in order at home before we begin to build castles in the air abroard. Olympic Games cost money, and our money needed first for other things... It seems to us, moreover, that from another point of view it would be wiser, bafore we again attempt Olympic Games, that visits should be exchanged between teams from the Dominions, the United States. Europe, and the United Kingdom. Such visits will familiarise athletes of different nations with each other's methods; and before they join in one big contest it is desirable that their rivalry should not be the rivalry of those. ill acquainted with each other's methods which are the main source of misunderstandings,"

Messrs. Baker and Jackson protest that they are not hostile to the revival of Olympic Games, but in favour of it. But they are not in favour of Olympic Games conducted as they have been in the past, and want the IO.C. to take adequate steps to safeguard the amateur's idea of sportsman- ship.

AN ABUNDANCE OF TALENT. From the New York Suz more information concerning the meet- ing of the International Olympic Committee at Lausanne is obtain- able. The correspondent of the Sun says" The Rev. R. S. de Courcy Laffan was the British delegate at the Lausanne con- ference, and he has given me an account of what happened. The countries represented were Great Britain, Belgium, Italy, Sweden Portugal, Bohemia, Swizterland, Luxemburg, and Brazil There was no delegate from France, but the president of the LO.C. is a Frenchman, and he expressed the opinion, that the Games would be supported by the French Government. In addition telegrams of approval were also received from Halland, Norway, and Spain.

**Mr. Laffan told me that the Scandinavian countries were so keen on international sport that Sweden would have organised an Junofficial Olympic meet if they | (the I. O. C.) had not taken action. We felt that we must retain control he added, 'and Belgium was eager and prepared to promote the Games next year we thought their wishes ought to be kindly considered.' Mr. Laffan has no doubt that England will liberally support the Games,

early in September. Thanks to the Army's practical sympathy with sport we (the United King- dom) have never had such an abundance of talent

at present

Mr. Laffan also hinted at a modified programme.

**The Marathon race is to be abandoned. It was open to serious objection on medical grounds. There would never have been a Marathon if the first Games had not been held in Athens. It was under- standable there, but elsewhere it is not wanted." "

Preliminary arrangements for the holding of the Olympic Games. af Antwerpt next year are rapidly being completed, according to advices received from Belgium. Close to 1,000,000 dols., aireždy have been subscribed, and this süm will be further increased during the next few months.
