JAPAN AND HAWAIE

MIMISTIC AMERICAN

REPORTS.

That Japan bas à conscientious and sincere desire to co-operate with Hawaii, was the statement made on June 3 by Mr Robert Newton Lynch vice-presidenc and manager of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. Mr. and Mrs. Lynch and Mr. Wallace Alexander, the latter a leading member of the San Francisco Chamber, arrived on, the Tongo Maru from Japan, where they had gone topread the gospel off business amity between West and East.

Mr. Lynch reports that the visit of M. Alexander and him- self to Japan, was more than successful from the standpoint of the friendly relations between the United States and Nippoa. This happy result was 'secured notwithstanding the antagonistic artitude of the Japanese press toward the United States at the timo of their arrival in Japan These gentlemen found a most cordial and hearty welcome on the part of the representative businessmen of Japan, but the Japanese papers were full off criticisms of not only America but other nations participating in the Peace Conference, due top the then unsatisfactory re sults which Japan had secured The introduction of tentative legislation further restricting the privileges of Japanese inalis} fornia and the purposed legisla tion against Japanese schools in! Hawali had also created much irritation. Messrs. Alexander) and Lynch arrived in Japan at the critical period and were ablə: to correct misunderstandings which existed in the minds of the Japanese public on these subjects and to explain to them the efforts to bring about cordial relations and the removal of unjust re- strictions.

PAPERS CHANGE TONE. During their stay the an- tagonistic foelings were entirely changed in the tone of the papers and high officials, such as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the representatives of the largest commercial interests in Japan, ex-

pressed renewed confidence in the friendly intentions of the United States and the expression of a policy of friendly co-operation across the Pacific.

The Hawaiian situation which had been very much misunder. stood in Japan was completely explained and it was clearly demonstrated that no hostility was gived evpression in the is lands:

A most enthusiastic recaption was given to the two Californians on their arrival with official dinners and receptions by the Yokohama and Tokia Chambers of Commerce. Receptions were also accorded by the main officers of such large concerns as the Mitsui Company, the Yokohama Specie Bank.the Sumitomo Bank, Takata & Company and the Toyo Kai- shen Kaisha. A magnificent villa owned by one of the million aire princes of Jagan, located at Kiota, was placed at the disposal of the party and receptions and entertainments were arranged by the Chambers of Commerce at Kiota, Osaka, Nagoya and Kobe. Mr. Lynch made arrangements with the officials of all of these organisations for close co-opera-
