work among the union men Radical-Socialistic influences at employed in the yants output has [been deliberately restricted to such an extent as to be a serious handicap to the industry. The price of production in British Columbia is set at approximately $200 (£40) per ton, compared with, $120 [24] in Great Britain. Such competition cannot be met successfully, it is declared, under present industrial conditions. The British Columbia Govern- ment has set aside £10,000 for the purpose of conducting experi- ments in iron smelting and steel, production from local ores. The lack of any such industry has added enormously to the handicap of the shipbuilding industry.

Every class of British tonnage has suffered severely during the war, but none is more urgently needed now than the large liners. It would be interesting to know! what the Cunard Company think about the proposed transfer of the great liners to Dutch owner- ship Out of 26 sea-going steamers which they possessed at the outbreak of war 15 were lost. with two exceptions by enemy action. The ships lost included, of course, the Lusitania, which had then a speed of 25 knots, and so shared with the Maure- tania the honour of being one of the two fastest ships in the world. Again, the Oceanic Steam Navi zation Company (White. Star Line) lost nine large liners,Steamships. representing 148,145 tons in Quinntbaug | Medina cluding the Britannic, of Haitan

The Royal Mail, Steam Packet Company, whose incipal trade is with South America, lost heavily, th many vessels sunk including the Aragon and Arcadian. It would-be to the point to bear what companies like these think of the proposed transfer. and all such companies would seem to be fully justified in protesting vigorously against any such transfer.
