MEDICAL OFFICERS, HINTS TO THE CITY GIRL.

The dress of City girls and their manner of taking meals- ware criticised by Dr. W. J. Hogarth, the Ciby medical officer, at a con- ference at the Royal Sanitary Instituta recently.

He had seen girls in the show? and elush of winter dressed more f fittingly for a garden party in summer than for the inclement weather, "The fur coat does not counter-balance the objection to short skirts, open-work stockings, and low-necked blouses,” he said. The meals which girl workers' had in the City refreshment shops were inadequate to their needs. They did not provide sufficient calories for the time the girls spent between leaving home in the morning and their return at night.

Referring to hygienic condi- tions in the City generally, Dr. Hogarth said the rat problem was assuming considerable im-" portance, and he really though"; their numbers were increasing also the list of iniquities to lie laid to their charge. Major Fullerton, who bad done coin- siderable work for the City, liad discovered that rats were carriers of the germs of jaundice.""

If there ever was an opening for anyone it was in derising sound method of attacking rate in our cities. Some methods -must be 'devised by which rats could be killed in sewers, and if they, could, find a fairly certain lethal method, which proved con- tinuous in its effects, they would go a long way towards keeping

rats in hand.

Miss Dick, of Westminister, drew attention to the bad con- ditions prevalent in some Govern- ment offices. The workers com- plained that these places were unhealthy. But there was no power of inspection because they

were Government buildings. “

Sir Alfred Mond, First Com- missioner of Works, said that the housing of City clerks and middle-class people was not less pressing than the one of housing artisans.

Mr. H. Elvin said the mortality among the clerks was high; 25 per cent. died from consumption nd 33 per cent, from some form of lung disorder. This was due to the conditions under which they had to work."
