FROM KHAKI TO CIVVIES.
VISIT TO THE WIMBLEDON DISPERSAL CAMP.
The mysteries that accompany that transformation of a soldier into a civilian_were investigated recently by s. Daily News repre Bentative at the Wimbledon Dispersal Camp, one of the six stations that have been opened in the country for demobilisation purposes. The other fire are at Shornclife, Oswestry, Chiseldon, Ripon, and Deddingston, and the ona selected for the returning saldiers is determined not by his regiment but by the convenience and the railway facilities afforded for returning him to his home as rapidly as possible.
The Wimbledon Dispersal Camp was formerly a training camp, and its chief characteristics are, therefore, wooden huts and mud. It has, however, been or- ganised for its present purpose with every humane consideration for adding to the joy of the sold- ier's release. It is capable of passing through the gateway to Civil life 2,000 man in 24 hours, though that limit has not yet been reached, and be man need be detained more than four hours. Os his arrival each man supplied with a substantial meal. If he requires sleep or medical attention it is at his immediate disposal. Then he passes into a hut where his arms are collected, and on to another where any deficiencies in his kit are made good for him, for he retains his uniform for a month. In another hat he is offered the alternative of 52s. Gil. caali, or being measur- ed for a suit of clothes which is sent to his hy registered post within 28 days.

The identification of each man often proves a difficult question. There appears to have grown up in the Army a custom which haa given the demobilisation officers a great deal of trouble. Visiting cards being scarce in the trenches, the approved method of sealing a friendship has been the exchange of identification discs, and it is no uncommon thing to End "Tommy' wearing the lise of a "poilu." The fact of islentity established. the waning soldier handles bis last sanilbag, into which he packs his trophies, loot, and personal belongings. Live bombs, and dangerous toys of that descrip! tion, he must regretfully hand over. This concludes the giving up part of the process, and the more popular programme begins. Each man receives two new £1 Treasury notes, a railway voucher to his home, a-ration-book, a protection certificate, and ae unemployment policy, which guarantees him 29a, a week and
allowances for children for 24 weeks while he remains anem- ployed.
A label is handed to him for the return later of his great coat, for which he receives a further 1. The gratuities and other instalments due to him on dis- charge are paid by means of a special savings deposit account in his name, which is posted on to him.
The soldier is then a civilian.
