NIGHT IN CHINATOWN.

There was a surprising turn to the mystery of Miss Billie Car- leton's death when the coroner's inquiry was opened on Decem ber 12. It was suggested that the young actress--she was 22-had been in the habit of taking drugs, and many questions were asked about a little jewelled gold box which she sometimes carried about in her bag. This box had contained a white powder, said to resemble cocaine.

The coroner, Mr. Ingleby Oddia, sat without a jury.

Bliss Carleton, who in private life was Miss Florence Leonora Stewart, had recently been ap- pearing at the Haymarket Theatre. She, was found dead in her room at Savoy Court-man- sions on the morning after she had attended the Albert Hall ball.

Mr. Lionel Belcher a friend of Miss Carleton described how he had arranged to procure cocaine for another friend, Mr. De Vealie.,

The Coroner: How much did you arrange to let him have it for ?-I had asked for £10 or £15, but only got £5.

"I know De Veulie's servant is called McGinty," said Mr. Belcher. "I got a wire signed McGinty asking me to meet her outside the Cafe Royal at 9.30. I knew what it was about. She asked me it I had cocaine with me.

got I said, 'Yes, and gave it to her. She said she wanted it for De Yealle."

The Coroner: Do you know if Mr. De Vealle spoke about cocaine before the Victory Ball?—Yes; he said he must have some by then. I had another wire from McGinty like the first one.. The wire was brought to me at the Cafe Royal. McGinty suggested she should come in the morning for the cocaine, and she did so, about 10.15 on the Wednesday morning.

COCAINE AT THE BALL.

The prituese added in reply to the coroner that when the servant called he was with a Miss Olive Riahardson. He wrote on a paper "£5," and McGinty gave him the money.

When he heard that drugs were Brispected

cacsing Miss Carleton's death he went to see Mr. and Mrs. De Veulle with his solicitor. Mr. De Veulle said he knew nothing about the affair and was not going to know any- thing about it.

Did you ask Mr. De Veulle any direct questions? asked bim if he had given any cocaine to Billie. He did not answer.

Did he say anything to you about what you were to do?--- Yes; to know nothing as well. He also said, "Nobody has seen me give it to Billie except one woman, Miss Longfellow."

Questioned by Mr. Valetta, who represented the relatives, the witness replied:Miss Carleton mentioned to me that Mrs. De Veulle was jealous of her as the ⚫ result ol Mr. .De Venlle's intimacy with her. She told me it was a ridiculous thing, and there was no ueed for jealousy.
