A Tough Job.

The task of the riveter in a shipyard is at times almost incredibly difficult. Take for instance, piece of work done the other day at Port Glasgos, Two plates had to be renewed. and rive'ed on to a leng iron derrick. Imagine a steel table 60ft. long and '8 in, in diameter at its widest, tapering to-10in. The new plates bad to be riv‹ ted on to this at about 40ft. from the open end, where the diameter is enly 13in. Through this dark and narrow tube a man and boy had to crawl 40ft until they rerched the exact spot. There they lie, stretched at full length, unable to turn to right or left. The red-hot rivets are dr pped through one by one caught by the boy with bis tongs, and put in pos'tion by him, and then riveted from the outside, whilst the "holder on" inside Fustains with his hammer the impact of the hammer strokes from without. The job lasts for days, and men and boys who can endure for so longer the darkness, the confinement, the strain, the deafening noise of the hammers only a few inches from their' heads, and the terrific vibration, are surely masters of their craft.

and before now it has happened that the iron tube has hd to be cut through from the outside to release a man" whose nerve bas given way under the ordeal.
