A Worse Place Than the Army, Convicted at Colchester of receiving 5wt, of rope, knowing it to be stolen, George Benjamin Goldewith, a marine store dealer, who stated that his savual tara- prer, wae: £35,000, was ordered by Sir Richard Mair, the Recorder, to join the Army immediately or else to appear at next Quarter Sessions for sentence. A Horton hawker, Edward Martin, was sentenced to months hard labour at Marle horough-street recently for steal ing 18 bales of cloth, valued at $1,258, the property of Messrs. Dormenil Freres, New Burlington street, W. Tao Hoxton youths, James Pearse, carman, and. Thomas Foster, were charged with Martin, and were bound Cvr. The magistrato evesely ceraared Martin for leading the lada satray. It was mentioned that he had been fighting in France, but was a deserter, 700,000 Women. Trade Unionists. The biennial conference of the National Federation of Women Workers opened in Manchester, recently, the delegates numbering about 200. Mis G. M. A Gift from Rubleben. Mrs. Spoor, of Rochester, has received a remarkable gift from 25 Kentish soldiers interned in Bablaban Camp, Germany en illuminated addrew expressing their sorrow on learning of the death of Mr. J. L Spoor, or ganiser of the Kentish Prison- are of War- Fand, and their gratitude for his self sacrificing fforts. The address is encizoled with a wreath of laurels inter- mingled with flowers, and diaplays the white horse of Kent. The fand raised by Lord Harris and Me. Spoor, for the relief of Beatish prisoners of war in captivity amounted to over $14.000.
