THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, SATURDAY, AUGUST 31, 1918.

FOR ACTIVE SERVICE.

10-DAY'S NEW ADVERTI EMENT.

Presentation to Police Reserve Officer.

At the Palics Beserve Hand- quarters Club last evening a very interesting little function took place when Mr. F. 0. Jenkin, O.B.E, DAP. (B), presented 0.8.M. Wilks with a cheque for 50 guiness on behalf of the Hong- Long Police Reserve Force. Among those present were Mr. J. W. Franks, ASP. (R), DE Jordan (Surgeon Supt.) and Lindsay-Woods (Assistant Sar-] geon Bupt.) Inspector Eastice, 0. 8. M Silva, C. L' Sirdar Khan, Inspector Arculli and à number of other brother officers.

Mr. Jenkin, in making the presentation, asid that in present- "ing a sum of 50 guiness to C. 8. M. Wilke on the eve of his departure for the front, he w38 performing a daty which had fallen to his lot on several occasiona on behalf of the Police Reserve Force. Mr. Wilks was going to the front aader the name of Conscript" but he thought that that name would not trouble him. If the word had any meaning at all locally it should not be applied to the employees but only to the employers who had by calling their employees in die pens- able prevented them from going before. Their relations with the regular Force pointed to the feat that they were appreciated and had rendered the services which were expected of them. The Bo- galar Police they know were quita tolerant towards them, although at the same time perhaps a little impatient, not unwarrantably so, with the auxiliary policemen and their ability, not forgetting the 'fact that they had not been trained

up to that profession. It was interesting to note that Mr. Wilks joined the Police Faroe three years ago because he was declared

to be physically unfit for the Volanieere." He (Mr. Jankin) did Dot Care what was the reason for Mr. Wilks joining; all, he could any was- that he knew that his brother Superintendents and Inspectors were glad to have got bim. (Applause). Every man who now lelt the Police Force WAR leaving a Force the members of which were called upon to per form a live daty in this Colony. and it was a matter of regret to him, although he did not say whether it wes not shared by somebody else, that some mem- bere of sha Dafence Corpa had not seen as to volunteer for the Force, although having been invited by not only the Government but also by His Excellency the Governor himself. It might be that they were willing to sée the war. through with the record of an hour's work a week to their credit. Be that as it may, it was their business. It was well known that the Police Reserve wanted more men, and if they did not cars to join be did not suppose .that anybody WRE going force them to do so.
