Japanese shipbuilders are to build and deliver 246 00 tons of steamers between January and May next year under the second.. sgreement for the exchange of Japanese vessels for American shipbuilding materials. It is now reported that the U.S. authorities have decided to alter the design of these vessels, and in order to make the necessary arrange. .. ments a Lloyd's expert has already arrived in Tokyo. will confer with representatives of the shipbuilders to-day and to morrow (5th and 26th instant), and will visit the Kawasaki Dockyard, Osaka Ironworks, and other shipyards at the end of this month. It is reported that the proposed alteration in design is for the purpose of making certain . provisions against aubmarine at- tacks and sicking. As to charter transactions. the Nippon Yusen Kaisha has chartered the Liaotung-maru, 3,50 tons, at Y 6 for the consting service. She is to be immediatelý délivered and "remain under charter until March next. It is understood this steamer is to be placed on a service from which oertalu Vessels will have to be removed in connection with the Siberian expedition. The other day the Mitsui Bussan Kaisba chartered a steame of 9.00 tons. newly built at the Kawasaki Dvoryárd, at Y4 for the North American service.
