the passage through the so-called' safe zone. As a sequel to this action the Dutch Government ordered that no Dutch ships except coasting and fishing vessels should leave harbour. The German Government has refused to give further safe conducts to Dutch ships, probably as a means of bringing pressure to bear on the Dutch to conclude the economic agreement which is still the subject of negotiations. American Diesel Engined Ships,

Although the United States have been the last to take up the building of Diesel engined verse's, great progress is being made in this department of shipbuilding. and a number of craft fitted with this type of internal combustion engines have been turned out. The experience gained with the lower powers has led to a rapid increase in size until to-day Diesel engines are being built that equal anything turned out in Britain or on the Continent. The largest Diesel engined motorship so far 'built in the United States in the twin-screw naval collier Maumee, of 14.500 tons displacement. propelled by two single-acting, two-cycle

Diesel engines of 2,600 shaft horse-power each. The engines were built by the machinery division of the New York Navy Yard, Brooklyn. New York. Each set of engines has six cylinders with a diameter of 25.2 inches and a stroke of 47.37 inches. At · a normal speed of 130 revolutions per minute the engines are designed to give the ship a speed of 14 knota. The vessel has been in active service for eight months,

18,600 miles without a hitch. The enzines have proved very 'satisfactory in service, and have been ready to respond to any emorgency. The only defect that has developed bas been the cracking of some of the cylinder jackets, which is apparently due to lack of sufficient clearance between working linera and jackets. It is thought that

For cargo-boats operating in localities where fuel oil is available, the "Diesel engine admittedly "has great advantages. The extra firat cost con very likely be made up in the first year's operation. Certain special advantages of the Diesel installation may be mentioned, as follows: (a) The enzine is ready to move in a few minutes; (b). Full power either ahead or backing is available any time; (c) No smoke or cinders, hence extreme clean- liness can easily be maintained (a particular sivantage for passenger ships); (d) Regulation of speed is much easier and *certain; (5) "All tand-by losses are eliminated Fuel consumpt fon begins and': casses' with movement of the engines.
