SHIPPING NEWS.

Our Repair Ships."

3

Highly important work is being done, in maintaining the number of British ships afloat, by the Repair Yards. Between August S, 1917, when the directorate got its organisation going, to April 25, 1918, 5,307 vessels have been repaired and restored, represent ing an aggregate gross tonnage of 16,150,000. This gives weekly average of 414.105 tons, but for some weeks past the average has risen to over 5 0,000 and is steadily increasing. As much as 2 120,301 gross tons of shipping have been in hand dur ing one week. Five ships, each over 20,000 tons, have left the yards ready for service in a single week

Shipbuilding in Japan.

The Communication Depart- ment, Tokio, in accordance with the decisions of the Standard Ship Construction Investigation Commisson attached to the Department, are conferring with the other Departments concerned, the principle shipbuilding com panies, etc., as to the adoption of some compulsory mésaure regarding the construction of standard ships, says the "Japan Times." The Communications authorities concerned intend to approach the Department of of Agriculture and Commerce for the loan of part of the Government Iron Works, Edamisu, for the purpose of making miniature models for three different kinds of standard ships of the most approved types, out of four kinds of war time standard ships, ten kinda of ordinary ones and six kinds of special ones, adopted by the Commission. On the completion of these models, a good number of skilled handa at different shipbuilding yards will be selected by the Communications Department for constructing three standard ships after the miniature models in order to demonstrate to the shipbuilding yards in particular, the simplicity of construction work, less time required for construction, esse of training workmen, the curtail- ment

of expenses, and the economy of the whole system. U.S. Shipbuilding. It is officially announced (says a Washington cable) that the Westinghouse plant at Eessing- ton for the manufacture of marine-power machinery is com plete and that the orders for apparatus representing 1,50,000 horse-power, equivalent to the equipment of about 300 steam vezaeta. will be filled before the end of 1919. The factory has an estimated monthly production. equal to about 75,000 horse-power, so that orders on hand represent roughly twenty months work, Though the plant is now officially, completed, it has been at work in parts for a long time. It has taken less than eight months to complete the total construction and this job is said to set up a speed mark in the way of American factory construction. There are seven large buildings, with a combined floor space of about 35 acres, and 5,000 oper- atives are required. The company acquired the Essington property toward the close of 1916. The storage house and pattern shop, with a foor space of five acres, was completed. August 15, 1917, By November 15th the last build- ing was finished, and on that date the foundry went into com- mission, the pattern shop having begun work some time previously. In fact, some material for the Submarine Boat Corporation, of New York, was delivered as early as March 25th of this year. The foundry has a capacity of 4,000,- 000 pounds a month. Other buildings include the forging plant, power-house, eracting shop by 125 feet. All buildings are and two machine shops, each 750

fireproof, with concrete roofs. The entire property is 500 acres, of which 110 ere included in the factory site. The Pennsylvania

Reading on the other. Tracks traverse the plant in all directions, all, even in the building, being of standard gauge. The factory tracks will eventually approx imate forty-one miles. It is known that the company is working on Bhousing proposition for its employes, there being nearly 400 acres in the property which could be turned to use in this direction The output of the factory will be the Westinghouse-Melville-Me. Alpina, steam; turbine reduction gear and other marine-power apparatus. The whole plant, which is a branch of the East Pittsburgh Machine Works, subsidiary to the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Com pany, is regarded as a particularly important member of the shipbuilding industry chain which has grown up along the Delaware during the last three years,
