Germans Preparing for Further Retreat. London, July

Router's correspondent at French Headquarters, writing this afternoon says: North of the Marne the enemy is pre- paring for a farther retreat in the angle between the alarne and Arde. They are blowing up munition dumps and burn- ing stores which they have no time to remove. The enemy'a position in a heavily wooded and broken country without main roads or railways that can be used is becoming, under constant pressure, more difficult hourly. The enemy to feed the Soissons-Marne front has only one line of railway in the Aisne neighbourhood from Bourge to Bazoches where it joins the main line between Soissons and Rheims. The latter can still be utilised for a certain distance astride Bazoches, but as the junction there is constantly bombed the Germans must find it most difficult to use the limited railway facilities remaining. The enemy will possibly fall back on the Verle line abandoning Crise and the commanding plateau separat- ing the Crise and Vesle valleys.

London, July 92. Latest reports of the fighting on the Western front this afternoon show that, despite strong resistance, the French continue to register advances at many places. They have crossed the Marne at two places. Yesterday's operations resulted in their prisonering a thousand between the Aisnë and the Marne, while the British prisonered 350 and captured four guns around Marfaux The Germans retreating from south of the Marne abandoned forty-five guns, bringing the total to 150 captured in the Allied counter-offensive. East were repulsed except of Rheims several enemy attacks north of Perthes where they rained a little ground. The French regained the old front line between Suippes and Massiges.

Germans Attempt Counter-Attack.

London, July 2

A French communique says: The Germans, to-day at- tempted by powerful counter-attacks to arrest our progress between the Marne and Ourcq. The French and Americans: resisted all assaults and accentuated their progress. We passed the beignts east of Lacroix and Grisellos, captured the village of Pieds and gained ground north-east of Mont St. Pere Between the Marne and heims hard fighting was resultless for the enemy. We hold our lines in Courten Bei woods.

The British farther north adranced, taking two hundred prisoners and forty machine-guns. There was great artillery activity, but no infantry action north of the Ocreq and in Champagne, and only artillerying at night-time on the entire baitle front. North of Montdidier a boldly con ducted local operation enabled us to occupy the villages of Madly Rainral, Sauvillers and Aubrillers. We have prisoner- ed 350 Eitherto. Our bombing squadrons were very active on the 21st, despite the weather and dropped during the day and night £fty tons on communications, cantonments and bivouacs, etc. in the Vesle and the Ardre Valley, stations at Laon, Fistes, Berryanbau etc. Feretardenois, which was chock. ed with troops and convoys, was especially bombed. The French opened a new attack north-west of Mort didier, advanced a mile on & front of four miles and captured three villages. An American communique of the 22nd says: Co-operat ing with the French we continued to advance. We crossed the Soissons-Cuateau Theny road between the Ourcq anu Chignon reaching the road to Beau, Epieds and Charteres. We crossed the Marne and occupied towns the condition of which shows they were abandoned in great haste.

London, July 25. Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig reports: We advanced our line alightly on the 2nd southward of Merris and Meteren and southward of Hebuterne. We improved our positions during the night if the Hamel sector. We success- fully raided in the neighbourhoods of Abiainzeville, Ayette, Uppy, Avion and Lens, taking several prisoners and machine-guns. In a patrol encounter at Merris we captured prisoners and killed fifty. There has been considerable nostile gas shelling at Villers Bretonneux and reciprocal artillerying in the Dickebush sector.
