America and the Red Sex. - A Direct American steamship service between the United States at the Red Sea commercial" district, via South Africa and India, is about to be inaugurated by the Smith Navigation Com- pany, of New York The number of steamers to be el gaged in the service is not yet published, but one has already reached Durban on the outward trip. This first steamer is expected to be retained temporarily for service between Indian Ocean ports, Pondicherry on one side and to Aden on the other. The registered tonnage of the steamers that are planned for use in this service is 1,600 to 2,000 tons each, with a carrying capacity of about 3,000 tons. All thesteamers will fly the American £ag.
