ALLIED ATTACKS IN FRANCE...
C บ
A Splendid Freech Effort.
London, Jane 29. Reuter's correspondent at the Frecen Headquarters. writing on June 29, says: "The advance made by the French this morning was between the Aisne and Villers Cotterets Forest, along the valley separating the Montigny and Dom- Plateaux. The stack was made on a front of 44 miles, the objective being the capture of a number of points which might be useful to the enemy in the event of a fresh offen- sive, chiefly Fosseenbaa valley. 2 miles south of the Aiste, and Cutry, two miles farther south below the crest of the eastern wall of the Valley. The infantry advanced at fre in the morning and attained most of the objectives in 14 hours, including Hill 169, which is 300 feet high, overlooking St. Pierre Aigle and Dommiers. The German artillery was dominated by our guns."
British and American Succ-sRes.
London: June 29. Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig reports: We prisonered over four hundred in Friday's successful operation eastward of Nieppe Forest. This does not include those prisonered westward of Merris
Two field guns, and a number of machine-guns and trench-mortars were captured. There is active hostile artillerying opposite Vaire Wood, southward of the Somme and westward of Feuchy, also increased reci procal artillerying in Nieppe Forest sector.
An American official message says: We again improved our positions southward of Torey. The prisoners taken in the operation of the 25th now number 300.
A wireless "German official message states: Three Bri-. tish assaults against Merris broke down. The enemy pene trated Vicaxberquin, but was thrown back by a counter- attack. We repulsed the French near Ambleny, but they gained ground beyond Cutry. Our counter-attacks threw them back on the heights on both sides of Gutry.
Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig reporting on aviation says: There was much air-fighting on June 28. Enemy ma- chines showed considerable activity. We shot down seven- teen and drove down six uncontrollable. Three of ours. are missing. Our airmen and balloons co-operated with the artillery, engaging batteries, and dumps with good destructive effect and causing a great number of explosions and fires. We dropped twenty-two tons of bombs at day- time and fourteen and a half tous at night-time on various targets.
Value of the Successes
Paris, June 2
A semipcial essage states: The successful French attack, cabled earlier, enables the strengthening of the defence against any hostilo attempt to surround the Forest of Villers Cotteret and to Compiegne from the north By pushing back the enemy line one kilometre east of Nieppe Forest the British advance, cabled on June 25, will have an important result, preventing any attempted German in- filtration.
Correspondents on the British front commenting on the increase in the number and variety, of Tanks predict that we shall soon see a pitched battle of Tanks.
Other Reports.
•
London, June 30. Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig reports: We repulsed after sharp fighting, an attack on a British post in the neighbourhood of Merris. We prisonered a few in night patrols on different parts of the front. There is considerable nostile artillerying against our new positions eastward of Nieppe Forest and also in the Albert sector, northward of the Scarpe and near Festubert.
A French communique says: We in raids, notably west of Hangard and south of Autreches, brought back prisoners. South of the Ourcq in a local operation we captured at
the p.m.
crest between Mosloy and Passy-en- Valois, thus advancing 800 metres on a front of three kilo- metres. We prisonered 276, including three officers,
10
Beuter's correspondent at the "British Headquartera, writing on June 23, says: The changeable weather lately has confined air combats to short periods whereof our sirmer have made the most, as witnessed by yesterday's fighting when in forty encounters fifteen enemy machines were des troyed, with the loss of only three of ours, The German preparations for further offensives proceed with unaccountable leisureli- ness. The enemy evidently does not anticipate the outbreak of initiative on our part, but some offensive move on our part should be kept mind as a possible event,
Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig reports only the usual reciprocal artillerying.
A French communique states: The Germans twice at- tempted to drive us from the positions we captured yester- day. A counter-attack by several battalions between Fos- seenbas and Ravin-de-Cutry was repulsed and the new front was maintained in its entirely. South-west of Rheims lively fighting occurred. In the Montagne-de-Bligny sector the Italians, drove back detacaments, which gained a footing in advanced elements
GERMANY'S NEXT OFFENSIVE.
Where Will It Be
Amsterdam, June 29. General Liebert writes to the "Taegliche Randschan" "It will not be long before another blow of the German nammer falls and the Entente will again be surprised when' once more it falls precisely where they now do not expect it." He also says we must familiarise ourselves with the painful thought that our Allies were unable to carry through the assault across the Piave, which was so boldly and dash- ingly begun.
The Prospects.
London, June 28.
A well informed source confirms the message from Rot- terdam regarding the impending German offensive being, probably in the northern sector, while subsidiary attacks elsewhere are likely. The Italians are not likely to launch any further great counter-attacks as difficulties would be very great, but it will be long before the Austrian army bas recovered sufficiently to resume the offensive.
EXCHANGE OF WAR PRISONERS.
London, June 30
Sir George Cave, interviewed, stated that he did not anticipate much difficulty in coming to an arrangement regarding a treaty on the war prisoners question. Ex. change was more difficult but he still hoped to arrive at reasonable terms.
AERIAL DEFENCE OF PARIS,
Paris, June 29. Newspapers criticising the anti-aircraft defence of the capital point out that even the most intense barrage rarely brings down enemies who descend low after, penetrating. Numerous suggestions are made to improve the defences, facluding the mounting of machine-gans on monuments, creating's luminous zone and separate zones for guns and aeroplana. Heavier reprisals against Frankfurt, Coblentz
and Cologne are also demandén,
An official mesinga says: An air zaid was made at 11.88 last night" Bamba were dropped but no casteliuos Jogeenlegi All plait was annojinced at 12.31.
