stion between those who repre- sented the men and those who owned the ship, for ensuring & proper standard of employment after the war. What form that arrangement would take he would not attempt to suggest They would discuss it openly and frankly with both parties, but it wes only due to these men, who had put themselves into the front rank of peril, that they should be fittingly dealt with. Referring to neutral ships which the Govern- ment had made use of he said they must make good their obligations There was a fear that the demands on our ship- building yards might result in delay in the restoration of our own mercantile marine, but it' was evident from the orders that had been placed that British shipowners were able to take care of themselves.
Oll Vessels,
The six auxiliaries, the Starlite, Twilite, Dawalite, Bunlite, Moonlite and Daylite, owned by the Standard Oil Company of New York, are now engaged in carrying oil in case between New York and South American parts. Owing to the shortage of tankers at the present time, the vessel have proved of great value, but because of the fact that they are very much underpowered, |their average speed has been much lower than is desirable, and apparently their nail area could have been increased with great - advantage. Having a length of 261ft and a deadweight carrying capacity of over 2,910 tons, s single hot-bulb'engine of the Bol- inder type, developing 329 hp, is inetslled While this is sufficient for purely auxiliary proposes, it is too small if it is to be run continuously, unless very amp'e sail area is provided, which was it the case, this being only about. 11,000 square ft. A log of one of the craft showed recently that out of 238 daya at sos the motorʼran 186 hours, the fuel consumption, including that for the donkey boiler and the oil. engine driving the dynamɔ, being. just over two tons per day of 24 hours. The lessons gained with these ships have been taken to

Australian Inter-State Steamers.
A number of Austrálian inter- State steamers have already conia under Federal Government control, and will be used as one fleet under the scheme laid down by the controller. The: Zealandia, of Huddart, Parker's Line, was taken over on April 6. She is a vessel of 6.669 tons. The Katoomba, 9424 tons, of M'Ilwraith M'Eachern & Com- pany's Line, passed over to Government control on April 8 at Sydney upon the discharge of her inward cargo Of the Australian Steamship Line the Timor and Burmah have already come under the jurisdio- tion of the controller, and the Buninyoung of the same line, has followed. Other inter- State boats will automatically come under control on the expiration of their trips. It is understood that vessels will be requisitioned on the basis of the Blue book rate, which is 11s per. to..., plus an allowance of 38. toi mest Australian conditions. Of S course, there will not be a fat rate of 14a. Some of the more modern and better equipped Vesse's will be paid for at a higher rate, while the rates paźd for others will be below 14s. One of the objects of this decision to control and organise all coastal. shipping is to make available as much tonnage as possible, which is now engaged in the inter-State trade, for use in other directions, where it can be of more service to the Empire generally This will mean the utilisation of in the trade in routes on they cannot now be employed.
