Kara Sea Route to Sibaria. The 1" Imperial and Foreign Trade Supplement recently contained an interesting account of the successful efforts that have been made to reach the interior of Siberia through the Kaza. 863. Some articles such as hides, have been carried by the ses route for £2 per ton, against £8 by: land, but the writer estimates the saving all round at 40 per cent, as compared with alternative routes. In war time the Kara Bea pute offers great and obvious advantages, the benefit of which, it is suggested, should be taken when the season opens in July.
Chinwangtao's Shipping.
The total number and tonnage of vessels which entered "and cleared at Chinwangtao during · the quarter ended in December, 1917 was 396 vessels of £91,919 tons, showing an increase of 133 vessels and 134,863 tons vihan compared with the same quarter the previous year. The percent- ages were 12.9 per cent. British; 59 per cent. Japanese; 17-0 per cant. Chinese; 41 per cent. American; 3.9 per cent, Dutch; and 29 per cent. Norwegian."
The Financing of Shipping. The Nippon Kogyo Ginko, the semi-official bank, has recently begun advancing money on the seadring of vessels, and for the purpose is making arrangements to open a branch in Kobe, de far, the bank has not yet received many requests for accommod- ation, owing to the fact that in the present prosperous, condition of the shipping trade shipowners are not in need of financial assistance. There have, however, been a number of owners, of wooden vessels who have approached, the bank with a
