A prosecution of the Commiss- ions of Customs and Exoise was heard by Mr. G. Doming (in the chair) and other magistrates st.f the Southampton Borough Police: Court: The defendant was George A Newmar, masier of a Govern- ment steamship, of Southampton, [who was said to have imported on December 7, contrary to proclamation, 10lbs. of granulated sugar and 3 lbs. of Indian tea. He had to answer a second summons for keeping and har- bouring the gods. The second offence, said Mr. Robertson, "for the prosecution, was practically one of smuggling, defendant. having omitted to declare the goods, which were subject to duty. The tea and sugar were discovered in 2 wrapped, addressed parcel on defendant's bunk. When he was asked in the usual way what dutiable goods he had in his possession

he declared fifty olgarettes only. When the parcel was found by the Prevention Officer at Cowes, he asserted that it was a military parcel and he knew nothing of its

contents. He added that the parcel was brought to the ship by the chauffeur, of a military motor car, and given into the charge of an under-steward, Captain Frederick Colople, em- barkation staff, described the
