SHIPPING

NEWS,

America's. Transport Service.

The United States has 2,762,605, tons of shipping in the Trans- atlantic service to carry men and munitions to France. In addition. there are still 471,000 tons of Dutch ships to be put into the service as soon as crew✨ are available, and 250,000 tons: of Japanese shipping are already arranged for. "By the end of May it is believed that American controlled Transatlantic tonasge will reach three and a half- millions.

The World's Shipbuilding.

Bir Owen Philipps, M.P., states, it is certain the longer the war.. lasted the greater would be- come the shipbuilding facilities throughout the world, as Eng- land, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, the United States, and Japan were all very considerably aug menting the numbers of ship building berths, and when peace returned it would be found that the total capacity for shipbuilding had enormously increased. Ger many would probably be one of the worst sufferers from the shortage of tonnage, as it would only be natural for the Allies to use the tonnage which might be left to them for their owA necessities first.

Lord Pirris's Appeal to Shipbuilders.

Lord Pirrie. Controller-General of Merchant Shipbuilding, makes the following appeal to shipyard, rusn-The German offensive bas thrown increased burden on the shipping resources" of this country and its allies. Enormous- ly increased supplies of munitions and war material have to be transported to France, not only from this country but also from America. The shipping resources. of the Allies were severely taxed bafore this additional burden was thrown on them. Our reliance on the United States for a noble answar to the Prime Minister has not been misplaced. It must be remembered, however, that every additional ship employed in sending this assistance means corresponding reduction in the quantity of food that can be sent consequently urent appeal is made to shipyard workers, employers, and all connected with the construction of ships to redouble the splendid efforts als ready made. They can take an almost direct part in countering the enemy offensive, though the actual fighting machine is the arbiter of the moment. Shipping production is of equal importance and a matter of vital urgency.

The report states "The sharpening of the enbmarine war placed the company in a new and very difficent positions already made difficult, enough by America's entry into the war and the closer blockade regulations. Ships on their way home fromg the Far East carrying sorely needed articles of necessity were detained several months in ports of inspe^tion, while the company carried on negotiations for a free passage for them back tő Desmark, which, however, was not granted." The ships were, therefore, directed to proceed to America, with consequent loss tos the company. Since the accentu
