SHIPPING NEWS.

Fire on a British Steamer. Recently wireless information was received-at-Bimonseki from

a British ateamar which sailed from Moji on the 14th instant for Hongkong, that she was forond to return to Moji owing to's fire having broken out in No. 3 hold, and the flames having spread to some consignments of coal ons board.

Japanese Owners Chary. The recent sinking of the 8. Tosho Maru" off Sardinia by a U-Boat; coming sa it did right in the wake of the ss. "Ikoma Maru," has caused Japanese shipowners to hesitate to despatch their vessels to the Mediterranean even on quite alluring farma affered, much less at the ruling easy rate of Y45 or so per ton deadweight.

Charter Transactions. The charter market continues active, and is somewhat upward in inclination says the "Japan Chronicle.' The Taiyo Kalun Kaisha has chartered the Meigen- mary. 6,828 tons, and the Dairen- marú, 6,000 tons, at YS4 and Y3450 respectively for North American and Indian services. These rates show an advance of about 3over the figures at which contracts were made laat month.

Unsuccessful Charter Transactions.

Some time ago it was reported that the Kuribayashi Shoten, of Muroran, had failed in a number of speculative charter transact- ions. It was feared that the failure would have a far-reaching effect inasmuch as those trans- actions are very complicated. It is now reported that the parties concerned have come to terms and the transactions have been readjusted. It is said that the readjustment has saved the Kurihayashi Shoten from a very serious loss. "Japan Chronicle."

Japanese-American Barter. Apart from the question of shipping some Japanese mer-" chants have been negotiating with American merchants for bartering copper and super- phosphate for iron and steel. For a time it appeared that these negotiations would be successful, but according to dispatches received on Monday by the merchants concerned, ani un- favourable change has come over. the situation as a result of the new American trade restriction. It is added that for the present the negotiations cannot but be : suspended altogether."

"

Export and Import Trade. for Dairen.

The import and export trade for the port of Dairen during last year beat the previous record. The vessels which entered this". port reached 3,118 715 tons which discharged and loaded 2,983,956 tous cargo valued at Hk. Tis. 145,152,550. Compared with 1916, a marked increase of 657,510 tona cargo valued at Hr. Tls. 38,012,937 was observed. The record tonnage since 1907 was 3838,078 tons in 1914. Owing to the great War, which caused serious dearth of hold space, not a steamer arrived or cleared this port in ballast,'

Shipping Board, Mr. William Denman, whose controversy with Major-General Goethals ledsto the resignation of both, appeared on January 22nd, before the Senate Commerce committes. His wooden ship programme, he sald, had been misrepresented. The Shipping Board had not been solely for wooden ships, but merely thought building them was the best way to get the additional tonnage needed? He *said that propaganis by the steel only as much money in the pot had been largely responsible for: the misunderstanding by the pablic, that the press "overplayed our hand in the inatter of wooden ships and that the fales impress- fon created had done more to harm ship extension than any thing else. Mr-Denman blamed Senator Lodge and othere who opposed the ship commandéering act when it first came up for the loss to the American flag of fifteen foreign ships. Mr. Denman read from a statement made by him before the. Commerce Com- mittee early last year, but nevez made public, in which the prediction was made that at the rate German submarines sačk hips in April♫ J9wk the for bst year would bs 13.

1917, the othe would be 1500,000 £67
