SHIPPING NEWS:
Wages in the Shipbuliding Trade, Arbitration proceedings affect ing some 25,000 sworkmen am- ployed in the shipbuilding yards of Belfast took place recently before the Committee on Pro duation; at 5, Old Palace-yard, Westminster. The employes, who submitted, claims for In- areases in wages on a varging scale to meet the high cost of living, wore supported in their demands by Mr. James Freeland (Irish organiser of the Amal- gamated Society of Engiasers). Mr. G. Greig (National Ama gamoted Union of Labour). Mr.
Lorimer (executive member of the ASE) Mr. H. Altwood (Friendly Society of Ironfound era), Mr. H. Howard (Boiler makers Society) Messrs. Har land and Wolff, Ltd, and Messrs. Workman Clark and Co, the employers concerned, were re presented respectively by, Mr. Saron J. Payne and Mr. W Strachan. Evidence baving been, beard in private by Sir David Harrel, Colonel Denny, and Mr.% G..Rowe, the committee reserved their decision till a later date.+
140 Per Cent. Dividend,” In referring to the prosperity of chemical industrial companies, in this country the other day, we incidentally mentioned that the Nippon Semi Kaisha, manufact- urers of sulphuric acid and many other drugs and chemicals, was expected to pay for the last tarmni a dividend of 60 per cent. instand of 80 per cent as in the previous term. This statement has proved untrue, for the Company has now announced that a dividend -will- be paid at the rate of 140 por cent That the prediction was not groundless, however, will be unmistakably seen from the following statement of acconats published:-
Net profit..................¥746,600 Reserve for equalising
dividend........,300,000 Amount brought forward,
etc ...................................misc.1,320,915

dividends........ 50,000 Bonuses.......... 74,500 Pension fund
********$0,000 Dividend 140 per cent... 1,400,000 Carried forward........ 802445 It will be observed that whereas the nat profit amounts to no more than Y746,630, about twice this amount is to be distributed in dividends. It is only fair to add, however, hat the Nippon Semi Kaisha has been most prosperous of all similar companies in this country. It is, of course, quite legitimate, and even desirable, to distribute some of the money formerly brought forward, but it is a little grotesque to deplete the reserve for equalising dividends.

permission for the sale of comparatively small vessels ɑko foreigners. It is reported thatof Late there have arrived quite a number of inquiries from France and Italy regarding vessels of less than 2,000 tona, In view of these offers the shipbuilders and shipping" men concerned "have arranged for appealing - to the Government to allow the aliens- tion of vessels: of 1,500ór 1,600 tons. They point out that thin would sarve the highly desirable
moribund shipbuilders without curring the loss of large, and superior, vessels which the Government most fears. At the same time the Government, it is further pointed out, is anxious to kcontribute to the tonnage at the Allies' disposal, and this desira would be most easily frealised if the permission: sskednsfor was granted.
