An Unfounded Report." Colonel Joseph N. Wafson, a lawyer from Manila who is nowin Yokohama and who is a friend of Justice E, Finlay Johnson, report~-. ed murdered, sccording to a press despatch form San Francisco, hea cabled his son in Masila regard. ing the report, and on October 14- received. a cable reply "anfound- ed" says the Japan Advertiser. Many people beside Mr. Justice Johnson's fellow-countrymen will be glad to receive this news.

American Soldier's Appeal. The appeal of Manuel Meamoir, an American soldier convicted by the Nagasaki District Court of the manelaughter of Japanese tradesmen on the night of July. 20, has been rejected, by the Naguski Court of Appeal, judgment being given to that effect roestly. Neumoir must therefore andergo three years" imprironment with hard labour.. Ha is also ordered to pay Y.3,170 ́se compensation and solatium to the son of the deceased trades......

Fatal Balbing - Acċidents. Three soldiers belonging to the Royal Scots were drowned while bething off the Haddingtonshire- coast. They were caught in s swell; and although gallent efforta- were made to rescue them the- men were overpowered by the waven, Two Lodies have been recovered. Mrs. Mabel Win- penny, a visitor, was drowned ar Withernses in endeavouring to- rercas ber son, aged 11, who wAB eventually saved by another

Marriage of Interned Men.

· Mr. G. Lambert säked in the House of Commons why separa tion: allow Does are apt granted to the wives of sli the naval men interråd, în Dollsød, Dr. Macnamara replied:-The goes.. tion doubtless has reference to a recent decision to imposs 16- strictions on the grant of enpara-. tion allowance in respect of men who bave married while interned in Holland. As a result of re- presentations that" have been made, the matter is now receiv-- ing farther consideration. The separation allowances paid in respect of man who were married before internment were, of course, not affected by the decision.

Why' Parin was Saved. General Mancary, the viutor of the Battle of the Oarcq, in September, 1914, who is now blind, describes in the Pelt Parisien the battles which de- oided the fate of Paris. He drawE a graphic picture of the French soldiers retiring exhausted and depressed and their joyoun' ardour when the order osme to go for-- -- ward, and they turned on Von Klock, inflicting upon bim's great.......... disaster and compelling him to bat a precipitate à retreat. "The battle was gained,” General Manonry remarks," not by macbines but by soldiers. The Germans retired simply beounse they were thoroughly beaten and because they could not continne the march on Paris. "I hope that open warfare will soon' be resume ed, for the French troops will always be viotorious in it because the soldier who sccepts war AÐ Á fatality over which be intends to triumph will always be superior to an epeniy whose worth wo must not depreciate bat, whose depression, will ingrenes, with his disappointments
